    From Panic to...Phew :)

    G'day All,

Some of you may have come across this before...I hadn't. I was trying to see how long I could go with the fuel light on to get an idea....passed one servo...thought could get cheaper a couple of km's up the road. Just as I pulled in, noticed the car was not running and rolled into the bowser. That was lucky I thought . Filled up, paid the fuel, turned the key....wouldnt start . Now having had a car accident last week was now thinking the worst. Plus with the D3 I had LR Assist.....with this one zip. So rang RACQ to see if I could join and get someone out. Whilst being on hold got out the manual and it had instructions what to do if you ran out of fuel.

If you dont know, basically turn to start 2 for 30 secs, repeat 6 times, do it again on last go and turn all the way around and plant the pedal. Ahhhhh the sound of the diesel coming back to life . Panic over and off we went. Thought would share in case someone else wasn't aware. Lesson learnt, when light comes on to be on the safe side, will fill up,

    Regards

    Well done Stevo

I've never come close to running out of fuel because I don't really want to push nearly 2 ton of vehicle off the road.

So the question remains....how many k's did you get from when the light came on and you rolling onto the servo?

And the other question...How many litre's did it take to fill and it must have been close to $140 - $150.

When it's getting to that level of spending you are just pleading for the pump to stop.

Yeah I was pretty lucky for it to conk out just as I pulled into the servo and rolled to the bowser, lucky again that it was night time and no other cars in the way . Not sure exactly but I reckon about 70kms on the light and yes about $140 odd to fill up...I didnt look to hard just got them to swipe the credit card ,

In my old HK kingswood I had a habit of running out of juice - at least 5 times (guage was way out...) - and each time I'd some how manage to glide into a petrol station. hairiest one was somewhere out the back of renmark and I noticed I wasn't going to make it - saw a farm house off the road about a km of main road - drove off the highway and down this poor farmers driveway and glided managed to get to his fuel tanks and pleaded for mercy.... Country people can be so generous.... Another time I was at the top of teh Dandenongs and managed to run down the bottom after a few kms without gas and just pull into servo. At uni. I'd always manage to run into the staff petrol bowser (well not literally...)

Just don't do it with a diesel....

I have had mine run out once, and as far as i know, you should only have to do this proceedure once, then foot to the floor and start, not repeat it 6 times then start.

It's the same proceedure for replacing the fuel filter.

    Stevo,

You're a lucky boy. You can shag your fuel pump by running dry in a TD5, as I found out, thanks to a 'mate' that did it in mine.
When the light comes in you have 9 litres left by the way

Thanks mate and yes, a slight case of the panics starting to kick in. Moreso as I was in a nasty car accident the week before in the missus's car :

So to have something go wrong with this one would have been the straw that broke the camels back , plus with a newborn and no way for the missus to get to me, yes the sweat was starting to form...the bad language had already started . 15mins at the bowser waiting on hold with RACQ till I thought to check the hand book..and voila...happy campers again,

    Regards

    Stevo
