    D2 drama's and advice

Today while on my way home from long weekend getaway the disco cab started to fill with smoke, pulled over and discovered the bottom main crank pully was wobbling all over th place and sqirting oil all over the manifold and so on. Tried tightening it up and it did nip up some but still wobbled heaps and was going to spit the belt off easily. so got it towed home. i'm guessing the front crank keyway is nacked hence causing the pulley to wobble and has blown the front seal.
    Is this a big job?
How much stuff do i have to pull out to be able to do the job?
Or is it a workshop mechanic job?

    Any advice would be appreciated

    G'day

I would ordinarily try most mechanical repairs myself, even if just to strip down and rebuild to save mechanic's labour costs.

If it were me, I would determine if the keyway has had it first.

If you are lucky, it may be loose bolts or some other minor cause. You may have to strip the stuff away from the fan cowl/radiator area to get good access.

If it is the crank keyway, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Take it to a mechanic and get second mortgage!

    Sorry!

Does the pulley actually move/wobble or does the whole thing vibrate when running.

The reason I ask is the my MicroCat for that motor indicates there are a series of balancing weights that you can buy!

Maybe your's has thrown a weight!

Also, MicroCat lists the pulley as a "Damper Assy" so, maybe. it's like the Commodore harmonic balancer assy and is a bonded rubber thingy prone to cracking. If they go, and they do, they vibrate and knock like buggery!

    Just a few thoughts.

    I feel your pain!

I haven't done it myself but I'd certainly be pulling the fan and radiator and having a good look at the harmonic balancer before taking it anywhere.

The balancer is known for having the outer move out of position and making the timing marks useless.
