It is fairly easy, Only specialist tool you would need outside of normal tools I can think of is a spring compressor set.
Will take a bit of time to do the fronts but its not hard.

hi all,
i am thinking of upgrading the suspension and to save a few $'s wondered is it that hard to replace yourselve and do you need any special tools for the job. non airbag d2 so standard springs/shocks to remove.
it would appear to be fairly straight forward but if anyone has any tips would be useful before i make a purchase.
cheers

It's not hard if you have spring compressor's.
CHEERS TIM.
i think i read somewhere(sorry to be vague) that once the shock is disconnected, and maybe the front sway bar, the coils will come out just by hand. can anyone clarify this? same for the rear, although i think the sway bar wont be a problem.
Wont happen Simon, unless you have a hilift jack and even then I think you need a lever. Spring compressor swill be safer.
Cheers

it is possible to do it without spring compressors but you have to lift the vehicle ridiculously (and possibly dangerously) high – those coils just keep expanding

I have done mine a few times you need spring compressors, Jack stands, a good trolley jack, blocks of wood and patience.
Takes about 2 hours,
Reverse to re install
- disconnect sway bar
- Jack stand under chassis
- undo bottom shocky bolt
- pull your ABS and Brake line clip from bracket
- Jack up remove wheel
- Lower Jack out she comes

You Don't need spring compressors to do the springs and shocks on a D2, if your only doing a standard replacement or up to a 50mm lift, i've done mine without a spring compressor.
YORKIE, if you need a hand just give a hoy, i can help if you want to save some $$$$.
