On a side note - the propshaft can be greased by screwing in a grease nipple. Does anyone know what size nipple I need to buy?
    1/4 UNF

I only bought one (box of ten) last week as I'd (the kids) lost the last one from the ash tray.

    Happy Days.

Well it looks like I need to do my front Prop shaft... I had planned on giving her a service today which would have included greasing the prop shaft but I had the dreaded chirping yesterday.... climbed underneath this morning and had a good look etc... seems the culprit is the Air-con drains.. (will do that mod while I am at it).
As can be seen in the pics... the shaft has been done previously (I have only owned it since October) as the DC has greasable trunnion caps and there is a grease nipple fitted for the splines. Not sure on who reco'd it previously. She has 199,800 kms and is a 2000 ES V8.
The problem looks to be the front UJ in the DC, which just happens to be directly under the AC drain.. it is dry and there is evidence of metal particles around the joint... there isnt much movement... none radially but about 0.5mm up & down and no discernible movement axially.
So.. the big question... do I grease it and leave it in till I can buy the parts or remove it and lock the CDL till I can buy the parts...
I tow a 500kg trailer around every day (local only) as I am a mobile car cleaner / detailer...
I am leaning towards removing it and driving very carefully... much less chance of catastrophic failure that way.

It doesn't look like the classic UJ failure, but if you think it is on the way out, definately pull it out NOW and have it checked.

Just moved the truck to a better spot where there was no load on the trans and there is substantial movement in the front DC Uni... so out she comes.. then off to search for spares around Penrith...

GRRRRR I hate Butchers... 6 of the eight nylock nuts are pretty much stuffed.. now I need to go find a self tightening spanner or a nice sharp cold chisel...
I really dont want to have to remove the transfer case output flange JUST to change the bolts so here's hoping I can get the nuts off without damaging the bolts... at least at the transfer case end.

Well... after having to resort to a nut splitter for 2 of the nuts at the TC end I finally got the shaft off... below is a short Video showing how bad the UJ at the front of the DC is.
The rear one looks fine as does the Diff end UJ which really points to the AC drain as the culprit in this case.
I wont know what condition the swivel bearing is in till I tear it apart... that will be during the week now.

After ringing around to Hardy Spicer, BCB Bearings and numerable other places it appears that the K5 A 747 are out of stock in Australia (through Hardy Spicer).
The K5 L4R vary in price from $18.30 each to $45 each and the SCV-82A is between $160 and $220 each...
I have ordered the Uni's.. I will strip it all down during the week and see what the centre bearing is like before I order that one.

Karcraft, BMI or another Landy importer/supplier and get the genuine HD GKN unis at a very respectable price in comparison to Spicer unis.

[edit] KLR at Kingswood probably had them in stock !

Purchased my D2 with 140,000 on the clock. Knowing the problem, I put a new Tom Woods at the top of "my things to do list"

Changed around 170,000 km and my old one was still ok, but I sleep better at nights with my Woody.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Karcraft only have the GKN Uni's or a complete prop shaft as the prop shaft isnt considered a serviceable item by Land Rover.. The uni's are the same as for D1 and are $51.43 each... far from reasonable really...

Tried to call KLR and the number just rings out.. I will try it later in the day.
In the end I have HS Uni's arriving today at around $19 each.. Hopefully the centre bearing is serviceable... I wont get a chance to start on it till Thursday now.
I still need to get new Nylock nuts or standard nuts and locktight.
