    Brake Job!!

I will start my 60000 mile maintance / I was planning in doing only brakes first / changing pads, etc. / winter is coming and, I need the car to have no problems, we live on a mountain , and my family rides in the truck /
    1. Should I change the Rotors?
    2. What type of pads should I use?
    3. Any other parts, what else will I need?
    4. I bought the Disco with 55000 miles, - MY FIRST ROVER -. I do not have past records. So I do not know the condition of this parts.
    5. The truck rides excellent, and brakes react very good, but I can feel that I have to go farther down to break.
    6. Type of brake oil?
    7. Special tools?
    8. Tips welcome, (I will use a rave cd, but experience is the best manual)
    9. I will pull a trailer in a year or two.
    Any help is appreciated, ..
    thanks
    Luis

    1. Replace if they are below the minimum spec (or close to it) you can find the min tollerance in RAVE

    2. The best you can afford - worth the extra few bob in my mind.

    3. An air line is good - to blow all the muck off.
    4. You should be able to see / feel - look at the pads for uneven wear, look at the rotors for score marks/ridges - measure the thickness of the rotors. Obviously check for leaks.

    5. D2 typically have a 'softer feel' to the pedal - took me a while to get use to it.

    6. Brake fluid - is this what you mean - the D2 (with ABS) need to be bled by using the testbook - but if you are just replacing pads/rotors you don't need to change / bleed the brakes - brake bleeding if required is best left to a LR workshop with testbook.

    7. No special tools I can think of - normal stuff, spanners, sockets - and a bit of string to support the caliper to stop breaking / stretching the brake hoses

    8. It's all pretty straight forward - From memory the D2 has anti shudder pads between the brake pad and the caliper - might be worth bearing in mind when buying the new pads

    Hey Disco0311

    My opinion on your brakes:

    1. Should I change the Rotors? The rotor should have a minimum width measurement moulded into the surface (near the wheel studs). Use a GOOD caliper (or have one checked by a brake specialist) but with 55,000 miles on they would probably only need a skim (if anything).

    2. What type of pads should I use? Get good quality pads (Ferodo or similar) don't mess with the "low dust" ones. To acheive "low dust" they are harder and not quite as responsive......I'd rather have to clean my wheels more often and be confident of my brakes

    3. Any other parts, what else will I need? For brakes: nothing much, unless you see a brake line, or something, damaged once the wheels are off

    4. I bought the Disco with 55000 miles, - MY FIRST ROVER -. I do not have past records. So I do not know the condition of this parts. Not an unusual story, but take heart in thinking that most people do the right thing by their vehicles and its only the unlucky owners we tend to remember the horror stories of.

    5. The truck rides excellent, and brakes react very good, but I can feel that I have to go farther down to break. Sounds like low on pads and possibly low on fluid. Serviceing the brakes will sort it all out and give you the piece of mind of your family travelling down the hill daily

    6. Type of brake oil? Use what's specified in the owners manual (DOT rating) and try and stick to a reputable brand

    7. Special tools? Not sure on a D2 but D1 was easy peasy (1 hour job)

    8. Tips welcome, (I will use a rave cd, but experience is the best manual) Ah...now you've got the picture

    9. I will pull a trailer in a year or two. Shouldn't be a problem. Just check the weight of the trailer against the owners manual, and whether or not the trailer will be independantly braked. But, in short, these trucks of ours were made for this type of thing!!

Good luck, don't panic. When in doubt, stop and have a cup of tea......everything becomes clearer after a cup of tea..........and watch out for your knuckles, there's only a limited amount of skin on them!!

    Cheers

    Jason

I would recommend not to use Bendix or mintex pads.....

They squeal all the time and just are not good on Landy's, great on Holden fords ect.

We had the bendix rep visit us one day...walked in the door looked around said "You guys only do Land Rovers" and then walked out....they know they have problem with Land Rovers.

We use Ferrodo, but Lucas/TRW or Genuine or Lockheed are fine.

Also caliper piston retactor tool is a handy tool to have...cheap enough from local part shops.

    Hi,

Interesting point mentioning Mintex pads, I have just done mine with mintex pads and discs, no sqeal as "yet", but time will tell. As for any other parts, I would recommend getting some new disc securing screws "just" incase the last person gorilla'd them up as they chew up easily, they are only cheap at £.045 p over here from the dealer.

I did do a write up for the replacement on my website, its not perfect but will give you a good idea as well as min / max disc measurements. If your discs need a skim, then change them imo.....

If you're after Mintex pads, drop the guys at Classic Obsession a line, tell them Boxer sent you. I think they only want about $60 ordered over the net for a set, when Bendix ones are around $120
