    16" RIMS 2ND HAND

    Af'noon all

    2 months ago we bought a secound hand sereis 2a disco, its great but we didn't know at the time that
    a) 18" wheels were abnormal
    b) it had them
    c) get anything but road tires in FNQ is not possible

    I have sourced a set of 16" steel rims that came new from a disco i am told and am wondering what I should check to be sure that they are OK to use

    I am told they have not been used though I haven't seen them yet. I got a good vibe from the bloke and my wife knows the family.

    What should I check to be sure there wont be any problems fitting them, are there any codes on them that will help ?

    if the rims are from a series 1 disco they wont fit the series 2,if they are from a disco 2 they will be fine

    The disco 2 rims are a 5 stud, 120 PCD Rim, the stud size is 14mm. D1 rims are also 5 stud but studs are larger (16mm i think??) and a differant PCD.

    Correct, 5 x 6.5" pcd for Series/county/fender/RRC/D1.

    PCD = pitch circle diameter.
    Basicly the diameter of a circle that runs through the centre of all the wheel studs.
    Means the D2 wheel studs are set in a smaller circle than the D1 wheel studs.
    84' 120" ute - 3.9 isuzu.

    BCD thanks for that - like I thought, it was simple....

    Now, another question,

    am I going to need new wheel nuts or will the alloy wheel ones work?

    If you are going to steelies i would get new nuts as the alloy ones will look a bit funny

    I have heard it said that you can use nuts from your alloys but personally don't think it a good idea. The wheelnuts for the alloy rims are not designed to take all the load of the vehicle on the wheelstuds, with alloy rims the load on the wheel is taken mainly by the rim resting on the central part of the hub (i'm not describing this well am i??) all will be obvious if you take your alloy rim off and look at the design.
    With steel rims the load is taken directly by the studs so i would use the correct steel nuts for them.
    I also think the alloy wheelnuts on steel rims would be vulnerable to damage offroad as they are quite large and would stick out quite far from the rim, and as mentioned by V8Landy, they would look odd
    Dont buy the nuts from a dealer, get them direct from someone like Rovacraft, the dealers seem to think the nuts are gold plated i think

    As mentioned earlier, check your PCD.
    The D2 from 1999 had a smaller PCD than the DI and if you have acquired steel wheelsfrom a D1 then they won't fit your D2a.
