what colour was the coolant?
Well, just had the mechanics report back from the garage (regarding my loss of coolant problem posted in earlier threads), and was "invited" to go see the damage myself at the garage, after removal of the head.
Corrosion from the water jacket around the engine has BADLY eaten away at the block, requiring major engine overhaul.
Only had the Disco 3 months, but found some old service documentation in glove box pack from "Guest & Puddey" informing a previous owner of this exact problem, so obviously never rectified. So the car was sold to me with a major existing problematic condition.
Been in touch with Consumer Protection who reckon I have a very good case for action, as technically (in their eyes, after explaining the course of events), the Disco was "sold in a condition unsuitable for its intended use", but need to see what the dealership owner offers as a suitable solution/agreement prior to handing it over to the CP people.
So looks like the Disco is gonna be off the road for some time now.
Will keep you posted.....

Actually, at the time I bought it, the stuff in the coolant bottle was clear, maybe very slightly green. I know what your thinking(!), and I reckon its had tap water used for a long time for topping up an existing problem.
To cut a long story short;
I bought the vehicle from a used car dealership about 3 months ago with little service history, but bought a 3 year warranty (just in case).
Been loosing coolant from day one.
I was booked in to have an LPG install, so decided to get it serviced for peace of mind and get coolant loss issue sorted knowing all should be good prior to the LPG job.
Found rad and something else was shot.
New rad (obviously new coolant etc as well) and other bits fixed partly under warranty.
Two days later found small puddles of coolant on floor after the car had been run.
Back to garage.
Head off for inspection, and have now found this prob.
Guess what - not covered by warranty!
Garage reckon the motor hasn't been looked after very well at all by previous owner, and its now become my problem.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck Kieren.
Hopefully you get some joy when you go back to the dealership and mention that you have spoken with Consumer Protection.
Hi Kieren
Ring that consumer mob up again and ask them EXACTLY what the dealers OBLIGATIONS are in the transaction of the Disco .... and why does not the dealer have a warranty on this car in the first place ... or are they hiding behind the "It's a 4x4 mate" routine
First up ... get the quote from the mechanic
Second .... Go see the DEALER ... and ask him what they are prepared to do
DO not feel as tho it's all your fault .... because you had bought the warranty
Some yards get you to buy a warranty in a attempt to shift the responsibility
JUST remember that they also got a cut of the action in selling the warranty
IF a offer of .... Our mechanic will fix it .... TELL them NO .. as he would not be Landrover Trained .....
In the course of a NO result .... Start writing letters to the consumer sqad
Mike
Right, just got a phone call from dealership with a result.
A new block is being brought in from over East and fitted with ALL costs involved being covered by the dealership owner.
Guys doing the work are Discovery Automotive (forumites in WA know them), and they have been the only mechanics involved since day one, so I'm pretty confident I'll get a good job done.
Must give credit to the used car dealership for acting promptly, and though he's not pleased about having to honour the job, he appears to be doing the right thing, with no animosity between us.
Fingers crossed....
(ps. Big thanks for the info Mike, I'll keep it on record just in case)

See a solicitor. Take action against the dealer under the Sale of Goods Act, not the Motor Dealers Act. Goods not of merchantable quality, not fit for their intended use. Motor Dealers Acts delivers slap on wrist. Sale of Goods Act delivers recompense to you and penalties to the offending merchant.

nicely done... Im betting that the dealership is covering as the warrenty agencies is pulling the "you sold it faulty so your liable." same thing happened with my 93 disco 2 days after purchasing 5th gear died the box was expressly covered by warrenty against failure.
the box had the wrong oil in it the warrenty company didnt pay for the box they paid for the lawyering to get the dealers to heal and then hit the dealer for the costs of the lawyering on top of the cost of the box.
Im thinking I might just have to go throw the MK I's over this Discovery automotives place.
