    in almost same position

    Hey JB75 -

Am almost in the same position - have a 99 D2 V8 - need a new engine. Keen to hear how you are going with this, and what you have decided to do. I have to decide soon.

Do you have any new info on the 4.6L engine. And was the AMV 4L motor really new - sounds like a good price?

My 4.0 V8 slipped a liner and I had to get it rebuilt. I chose Range Rov to do the job. It cost around $8K.

However I am not entirely happy with the result as there is a noisy rocker which Range Rov did not want to fix.

Now it will cost me more money to get that fixed. If only Range Rov would have fixed it, I would have been a truly happy customer. They got 95% of the work done but why not just get it right and a customer will be completely happy?

I would have been so happy to recommend them, but because of this issue, I'm not sure I want to recommend them.

    Hi Grange

Ended up putting the 4.6 motor in, as the cost with range rove was within a couple of hundred dollars of the standard 4.0l

More torque better power, suposedly better fuel economy but will have to wait to see.

Had no choice really, the motor was stuffed bottom end and had been overheated. Luck that the heads were OK and just needed reconditioning.

I got a few quotes from different landrover places and got varying prices, however just be careful as you need to make sure it includes everything as well as clarifying what's actually brand new on the engine, as they swap allot of stuff over from the old one. I had one quote at $4k but turned out that was not including the heads and not including installation which brought it up to $8+ K.

I think overall the 4.6 was approx $8,500and the 4.0L was low $8's. Recondioning the old motor was approx the same price from memory, so really it was a no brainer to put the 4.6 in.

I initially tried to do things the smart way by getting bits here and there, but personally the best thing to do is drive it in get the new motor drive it out.

Range Rov had I think 4 of the 4.6 motors left, they are new crate motors from LD, but they will then put on your old head reconditioned along with alot of other bits. Am I happy with Range Rov? I would give them an 8/10, engine seems strong aned runs well. I certainly have alot more confidence with the car in not letting me down now.

I have had two issues immediately since getting the car back.

I have had to replace the crank sensor which failed the day I got the car back, and now there has been a belt noise which is quite loud, which after looking at it for me on Sat, I have to book the car in this week. Looks like alternator bearings or one of the pulleys. Would have like these issues to be done when they do the motor, but maybe my expectations are too high.

Understand that the new motor will put strain on the old components, and they did replace one of the pulleys when they put the new motor in so they did go over it, and from what I can tell with range Rov they will try to save you money rather than just replaceing everything, which is a good thing, but then may cause issues down the track. Not sure if there is a right or wrong to this situation.

My only suggestion is clearly outline that you want them to go over every component that goes back onto the engine once redone.
