    Hi - New Discovery Owner

Hi guys just bought a Disco, against the advice of everyone else however I really love these cars.

    It is a 2001 series 2 (obviously) V8. 165k 7 Seater sunroof.
I will look at putting direct injection gas on it, however it needs a bit of work to bring it up to standard, or should I say the standard I like my cars.

Unfortunately I have already got issues, which I sort of expected and factored in when I got the car relatively cheap.

I think the Auto is gone, won't change into top and revs high at low speeds with a whine. And she got very hot very quickly so I shut it down before it became an issue or warning lights came on. The overheating could be something and nothing however I think the auto's a different story.

As I intend to do a bit of work on this car, who's the best for spare parts etc?
I am chasing a towbar tounge and ball (Towbar is fitted however without the towing attachment) need a rear bumper cover (cracked).
Also need a new second key, does anyone know where to get these?

That's the major stuff to start with, I am having Range Rov Automotive look over the car, are they any good? Is there anyone else to recommend in eastern subs vic that is also well priced?

Open to any recommendations and advise you may have, as I want to put togther a solid disco, reliable and something that once I have sorted I can start putting lift kits on etc for some light 4WDing.

I am located in Vermont Vic (nunawading area).

    Cheers
    JB

Welcome along JB. There's also Roverland and All Ranges 4wd in Boronia that are good places. Parts, well it depends what you're after but it pays to shop around and the internet is your friend.

Hopefully the temp issue is something as simple as a thermostat but how long has it been like that?

    Parts, try TRS in SA.

    best of luck.
My theory is to buy cheap and spend money on it so you know what has been done.

Yeah that's my theory, well at least it is now!!!

In a way like you said big guy, I am sort of happy that these things are done up front and I'm not finding out up in the bush.

Range Rov are pretty good - I use them - they have stuffed up a couple of times with minor things but always put it right. I mainly use them because they can supply a free loan car ( if you book one ahead ) which is very convenient. Also used Ritters they are OK too. For big jobs ring around and get quotes.
For regular servicing etc, look also around around the other local ones like Roverland etc, visit each one, take a look at their workshop, have a chat with the owner - you'll soon know which one you want to go with..

Peter and Big Guy, thanks for your replies. Obviously new to this forum, and new to Disco's so my knowledge in relation to these vehicles is minimal but I'm learning day by day!

One question are people relatively friendly on this forum? I like to get involved with my cars and would eventually like to get on some trips with people on here if that's the sort of thing that happens.

Have'nt heard back from Range Rov yet, I am hoping the news will be good but my gut tells me not. I have just asked them to go over the car as well as trying to diagnose the obvious problem of transmission and overheating.

I just do not want to end up spending more on the car than what I paid for it. Just out of interest and I am also interested in other forum members thoughts on what you should be paying for a 01 disco 165k. It's not the base model I know that, as it has sunroof, 7 seats, looks like it's got the Hi comp engine (premium fuel only?) plus fog lights in the bottom bumper etc but no leather or woodgrain, it's that silver/gold colour.

A bit more background on the problem, literally drove it 5 mins down the road and she was just under the red on the temp guage, as I said no warning lights, but it was clear that the guage was going to go into the red if I did not turn it off. At the time driving down the road I was more listening to the car and feeling what the auto was doing. It was OK at crawling speed but a little clunky as it sped up. The faster the car got the more the whine became apparent and by approx 50-60km/h she would not change up another gear so was doing approx 3500 rpm. From my reasonably good mechanical knowledge in general (Not discos) the transmission is screwed. Looking under the car there was oil all around the transmission tunnel, which as I said does not look good.

I suppose as you can tell I am excited about the car and want to get all the information good and bad on it. What else should I look for on the car? I was going to get a major service done, eg getting all the fluids changed, plug etc, but is there anything else you guys would recommend doing to ensure the cars reliability?

I'll post again once I know what the issues are and whether to shop around to get them fixed or just get Range Rov to do it.

    Any recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated!!!

    Thanks guys.

    Ok range Rov called.

his words were "Hope you got it for a Good Price"

    Damage is $3800

    Transfer case
    160k Service
    Windscreen
    Headgasket & head tested etc
    4 Brake Discs
    Belt
    couple of other minor things

    This includes RWC

They seem to think the auto is OK and just needs a service however I have asked them to check it again.

Well I am trying to look at it from a positive perspective, that at least all the stuff is done, and this is the risk when you buy a vehicle cheap knowing that there are issues.
As I said I am trying to remain positive, however looks like the direct injection gas will have to go on hold for now.
This means all up the car with have cost me approx $11,500.

Aside to this I need some advice on the best place to source the following parts I really need.

    Towbar tounge (towbar insert)
New Spare Key - Have been quoted $300.

    Again guys appreciate any help.

    Cheers

Tow bar tongue should be a standard size. I took the one from my previous non-LR 4wd to use on my D1. Try an auto dismantler for one. The remote for my D1 was about $190.00 from memory, but is different to D2 so $300 could be about right.

    Spare Key

I paid $275 for new key fob and clear the error codes on my D2.TD5. So $300 is not rip off Cheers George
