D2 wheel nuts

Hi,

Ditch the lock nuts they're just one more potential problem waiting to catch you out.

I picked up spare normal wheel nuts for $5 each from "Toorak Tractor" in Braeside (Melbourne). :)

Be careful with your wheel nuts on the spare. For some crazy reason only known to LR the bolts on our D2 spare wheel carrier are longer than the the wheel studs. The wheel nuts that hold the wheels on the car don't pull up on the spare as the thread in the wheel nut isn't deep enough. The wheel nuts on the spare have a deeper thread and are denoted by a dome on the top of the nut. Fair dinkum I'm not joking.

The 'spare wheel' nut on the left has a 50mm depth of thread whilst the 'real' wheel nut has a depth of thread of about 35mm.

None of this makes much sense to me. Why would you design a car with totally different wheelnuts for the spare ????? :wasntme:

The easy fix of course is to cut 10mm of the spare wheel bolts with an angle grinder. Jobs right all fixed.

BTW when I checked the 6 spare wheel carrier retaining bolts 5 of them were quite loose. :eek::eek:

I would be happy to replace all my locking nuts with the standard nuts, however I have no tools and can't get the lock nuts of in the first place:(.

Britparts have a catalogue that shows about 10 different locking nut keys - code A, code B, code C etc.
Unfortunately the pictures attached to each of the different codes shows the same picture, so I can't tell which code pattern is the right one.

Is there anyway to tell what code key I need?

It's becoming a bit of a problem as I have a slow puncture and can't change the tyre:eek:.

I got mine off with a hammer and a cold chisel. Crude but efective.

i got 2 full sets of standard nuts and lock nuts and 2 keys :) 1 on the car and 1 spare set.
also got a spare set of alloys. all just in case :)

I dont see how they can sell you a car without the equipment to change tyres,,

did you get the key tags?

is there a jack under the bonnett?


call your local RACQ, or visit your local Land Rover Dealer,,
go on the next D2 ONLY offroad trip and ask people,
hit up D2 owners in car parks,

I don't think the guy realised the tools were missing, but he seems not that keen to help now the car is out of warranty and he is semi-retired.
There is a brand new bottle jack under the bonnet.
I'm not sure what you mean by key tags, but I'm pretty sure I haven't got any:confused:.
I may have to go with Deano's suggestion and get the cold chisel out. Bit of a last resort though.
I still love the D2V8 though:D.

I'd be surprised if that ten year old brand new jack worked!!
They have a tendency to lose, er, oil, without leaving a trail:eek:
Try it out!

The key tags are large bar-code tags that LR use to electronically tag your key to the car,,
or something like that.

If you got two keys, you should have got two tags,,
they may be in the manual wallet,,,
