    D2 wheel nuts

    Hey guys,
While checking the Disco over last night, ready for tonights trip, I realised I've never checked for the jack!

So I found the jack behind the battery. There was no handle to operate the jack (fixed that), no tool for getting the nut covers/caps off (indicated in the owners handbook), and no brace for the nuts!

I've got the lock nut adaptor - is the wheel nut size the same as the locking nut adaptor? None of the braces in SuperCheap fit.
And how else can you get the thin metal covers/caps off?

Any help appreciated, and any info about where I might get the right tools from around Perth?

    Cheers,

The wheel nut size is the same as your lock nut key - 27mm.

The thin covers on the wheel nuts stay on. It's the cover on the lock nut itself that needs to come off. There is a remover supplied with the car when new but it sounds like you might not have it now.
ANR5436 is the LR part number.

    Silly question

Have you checked under the rear seat for all the jack and wheel brace accessories? Thats where the factory hid them

Hi, in emergency you can remove the covers off the locking nuts with a large flat bladed screw driver although the real thing works best. If you are after a wheel nut spanner, I use a good quality breaker bar and a 6 sided 27mm socket, available from stores such as Repco or specialised tool resellers.

I would use a 3/4 drive breaker bar and single hex 27 mm socket as per above post. I actually use a sidcrome 3/4 drive rachet with a lenght of pipe on it, but others said that I should not use a rachet like that, though I have done this since the early 1970's. It was on smaller nuts of VW's originally.

    Hi All
Yes the lock nut cover remover is not that strong and being plastic broke. Now I use two small screw drivers one each side. And the lock nut key it self can split as mine did, had a little bit of trouble getting a tight nut off. Thanks to a rattle gun... I used my foot to try and crack it and it went side ways and split...hammer and welder fixed that ....no not the tight nut!! the nut key..just some thing to watch out for....Robert42

Southern's on Albany Hwy have the plastic tool for removing the lock nut covers in stock. Can't remember what it cost, but wasn't much - I bought one there a couple of months ago.

Get yourself some replacement non-security wheel nuts for your d2. Chances of anyone trying to steal a D2 wheel pretty slim. As someone said the key that goes with security nut splits.

All of those tools that you are missing, should be in the black bag in the pocket, inside the back door.
But I'm sure you've already checked there.

You can remove the lock nut covers by using the 27mm socket and giving the covers a light twist - they come off readily.

I took all but my spare wheel lock nuts off years ago - they are a pain and most likely to fail on you when in trouble. If you change wheels regularly, get rid of the lock nuts and replace them with standard LR nuts.

    Cheers,

    Franz
