    Never ending D2 saga

Have to start with a positive, I love my 99 D2 TD5 manual (240,000k's) . Comfortable, great tow vehicle, superbly economical.

But my never ending string of mechanical problems is doing my head in. The only thing keeping me from getting rid of it as a lemon is eventually I will have replaced all the stuff that can break...

    Up till now my problems have been ;
Dropping 5th bearing the day before Easter long weekend.
    Ignition barrel seizing.

I had been getting the bits together to change out the water pump because of a static weep when the block is cold and the radiator is warmed by sunlight. Intentions are to do the intercooler hoses and a full set of coolant hoses while I have the thing in bits. That is all pretty much under control, once I can swallow the parts bill.

Driving home tonight I noticed a vibration through the steering wheel and gear lever when >70kph and accellerating. In 4th or 5th. No vibration evident below 60. My first thought was 'great, bloody ex-wrecker gearbox' because initially it was only evident in 5th..

Got home and crawled under. The front uni on the DC joint has slop in it. I checked it only a few months ago and it was rock solid. Looking at the shaft, it has circlips on all the bearings and the front uni has a grease nipple. Does this mean I have a non genuine / modified shaft already and can overhaul the joint? If so, can I expect to find a 'uni overhaul' kit at any decent bearing place ?

Intentions will be to pull the front prop shaft and lock the CDL for a few days until I can get things sorted out.

While I was looking around I noticed dampness on the bell housing and gearbox. Diesel on the bell housing and oil on the box. I have not had the acoustic cover off yet today (spinning anchor nut makes that a bit difficult) but I think it is comming from the back of the head.

Correct me if I am wrong but this is a big neon sign for fuel pressure regulator ? Guess I am going to be picking up o-rings at the same time as the uni kit. Can anybody point me to the thread about FPR o-ring replacement please? The really ironic thing is I was reading the FPR thread last night thinking the info was really handy and I should make a note of the o-ring details .

I will probably do the fuel cooler o-rings also, since everything else is comming apart.

Any constructive advice or comments appreciated. Don't bother with 'burn it', believe me it has crossed my mind

    Chin up old boy
    Its a Land Rover

I dont have any advice as Im mechanically inept. I can only offer constructive support.
I have a 99 D2 TD5 and its had transfer case seals go, the fuel pump blew up one night in Sydney Harbour Tunnel. Master cyclinder went, rotors were stuffed, turbo drain gasket went, both engine mounts died, air flow meter is RS, tie rods screwed, injector harness oil leak all and the good ole ABS modulator has gone bang and orange in now my favourite colour.

All went between 140 and 160km.

Once a couple went and got fixed i figured I may as well keep going. Im going for the replace all parts and get a free beer mug.
trouble is it doesnt really bother me LMAO!!

Ive guess ive just added the vow of poverty to the pre existing vow of chastity.

maybe married catholic priests should drive Land Rovers

I know where you are coming from Peter. Things go wrong one after the other and it's frustrating, expensive and time consuming. But you soon reach a place where a decison has to be made. Either keep on going or stop spending and get rid of it. Not an easy thing to do as you have probably spent a fair bit of the hard earned already.

I reached that bridge a while back and with my heart in my mouth I crossed it in the Landy. I kept on spending and suddenly the spending stopped and the to and fro anywhere trouble free driving began. I've been covering 200 klicks a day in my Landy recently and I was only thinking about her on the way home tonight. The beast looks, feels and sounds like a new car without a rattle, creak or groan and not a drop of fluid leaking from her anywhere. A little pressure on the go peddle and she just flies effortlessly and without using very much of that expensive go juice.

Hmmmm. Unlike my Landy I have rattled on for a bit here. Sorry about that but hope you gain some optimism from my tale.

Mate, have had all of the above issues plus window motors, oil pump bolt (requiring a replacement engine), which in turn needed the oil harness done (so that's twice now), horn button (which I'm told is a common problem), airbags sagging...shall I stop? But I've hung on to it because a) it's a land rover; b) when it's working, it's just so comfortable to drive; c) it's a land rover and d) did I mention it's a land rover? Must have been a Friday car, but either way, it's now something i've invested my money in and I'm not going to get rid of it so some other person can benefit from my misery !!

And then I bought a series II

    Hmmm, now let's see:

rhf doorlock, wiper stalk, gear position switch, fuel cooler, fuel block, injector o-rings, fuel pump x 2, radiator, transmission oil cooler, turbo hoses, oil pressure switch x 3, starter motor, horn button and probably some others I have missed...

Still to do: HVAC blend motors, shuttle valve kit, engine mounts, lhf doorlock, ignition barrel...and probably some others I don't yet know about Thank christ the last owner had to foot the bill for a replacement transmission!

Now I call most of that "remedial work" and when I add all that up, it would have a) paid for a lot of fuel for off-road fun, b) paid for a lot of good mods.

And while I come on here and complain and sometimes and I too want to burn it and put the insurance money towards a boring but capable TD42T Patrol ....

...It's still a Land Rover, and it's my Land Rover!

And if you want proof of a psychic connection and that "they" find you, you don't find "them", I was sitting at the lights the other day thinking "wow, I haven't seen the 3 Amigos for a few days now" I kid you not, within 30 seconds - there they were, shining brightly in the dash like the fires of home!

    Hang in there Peter!

touch wood, I have never seen them.

Turns out one bearing on the DC joint was totally dry and had chewed out the bearing race.

Can anybody suggest a decent operator to goto for a rebuild / exchange, in Adelaide ?

Mate I have exactly the same disco as you with the same amount of km's, and I haven't had any of the trouble your talking about...yet
Some of the problems you are experiencing can be prevented and easily fixed. Like the uni joints, take it to a truckshop of bearing place and they can rebuild the shaft for you and balance it for you. Then grease the uni's every 5000kms or everytime you have been through water, the they should last for ages. As for the Fuel pressure regulator, go to www.discovery2.co.uk for a full tutorial on how to fix the problem. Urban Panzer on here has some great tutorials on there, on how to fix just about any common TD5 fault.

Like some have already said, there is hope, and when u fix these little things the car will be like new again. I want to replace my coolant and intercooler hoses as well, I will go silicon as it lasts longer and gives better performance. Oh and while you have everything stripped, clean your intercooler too while your at it, I'm yet to clean mine but I've been told it makes a big difference as a lot of gunk gets in there.

    Hope that helps a bit
    Cheers
    Hendrik
