    What's my TD5 D2 worth?

    I know people hate these threads, but I really have no idea what I should ask for or settle for. The time has perhaps come to sell my beloved D2, but I have no idea what sort of $ to expect for her Under no illusions here and realise I will be losing shed loads of money, but the more knowledgeable amongst you I’m sure, will have a better and perhaps more realistic idea of what I might be able to advertise my baby for.
    My ’99 manual TD5 D2 has been lovingly serviced since I bought her in approx 2005 with 90,000ks on it – now has 170,000ks. This car has been serviced religiously every 5-10,000ks and all servicing and work has been carried out by a specialised land rover mechanic (Rick’s 4x4). All accessories and aftermarket parts have been fitted by professionals and nothing has been fitted by me. I can provide exact dates and k’s of when ALL work was carried out and will if I end up selling.
    This car is not a daily driver and is used solely for taking my kids and family away camping and 4 wheel driving. It is used but I would like to think I am a considered driver off road and although I like the rougher stuff, I treat everything I own with care. This car has never failed to take me and my family to our destination, perform perfectly when she is there and then ferry us all back home again in comfort.
    If anyone is considering buying a D2, I would encourage you to chat to anyone else in my club who knows me and the car.

    Neither at the moment......will replace it at some point but simply need some funds in the door just now and as its has been on about 3 trips this year..........seems silly to have it sitting there doing nothing.

    How long is a piece of string? Mate, sounds like you have taken care of your D2, and as I have found when car shopping, it can make a world of difference. I paid a little more that it was technically worth for my D2 V8 when I bought it as it was a good car, and I was prepared to pay over the odds with it. However, I know the Td5 market is totally different to the V8 market, BUT I'll chuck this in for consideration:

    There will be those who want a Td5 that has never been off-road, as the assumption is that it has thus not been abused or worked hard. There are probably quite a few around that have been used only as mum's taxis, so that might be a negative for your car. BUT also there will be those who will want the off-road gear and you have made life easier for them - but I'm sure you know that most people won't pay a whole lot extra for the mods.

    The first of the D2s are coming up to 10 years old next year. That will affect their value -it's like a car reaching 100,000km -once you get into double digit age or five-digit kays, a car's value drops, even though it really measn nothing - condition means everything. I have already seen D2 Td5s advertised for the low teens, but who knows what state they're in.

    Getting people to actually look at a car for sale is more than half the battle - if they are like me, the first few they go to see they're all excited, then when they are disappointed by seeing several tired old hacks, they get more selective. Then it's also convincing people who have been internet shopping for cars that the immaculate looking Td5 they have seen for $10k (but not actually physically seen) is half the car yours is at (I don't know, just guessing) $15k, as the other car needs a new transmission or whatever. As we all know, you can blow a lot of cash fixing up a 'cheap' Land Rover.

    Good luck with the sale.

    Start with a redbook value:

    1999 Land Rover II Discovery Td5 Manual

    * Private Price Guide $8,600 - $10,400
    * Trade In Price Guide$5,800 - $7,600
    * Average Km140,000 - 230,000

    Then I guess factor in the mods and work from there. (Although mods don't really add huge amounts of value to any vehicle)

    Mods definitely help up to a point. I would think with all that gear to the right person. Subtle mods add but in some cases I've seen extreme mods reduce value

    True! With all the eco-woe people are saying it's nearly impossible to sell a car privately at the moment You need to factor a long wait in.

    The mods might not up the price that much, but they may help with making it more attractive for a buyer. Also consider parting it out. You will get a lot more for the accessories than if you sold them on the vehicle.

    Cheers

    Angus

    p.s- Can I have all your maxi drive gear?!

    OK I'll have a guess.

    I think to be realistic I'd be asking $15K and you may (will?) have to settle for less.

    It'd be nice to think you could get 20K for such a nice sounding vehicle. But I think you'd be waiting a long time. Plenty of newer 2s around in the 20's. Quite a few MY03s turning up now in the 20K area too.

    It's a pity how the extras just don't seem to add value to your vehicle (obviously many 1000s spent.) Would it be worth dismantling and selling some "bits" separately?

    Good Luck anyway.
