    Early D2 diesel specifics

G'day. I'm new to this site, have been searching the forums and have decided what questions I should be asking.

I'm seriously considering stepping up to a disco from my s1 V6 Pajero.

Having seen the improvement in off road capability of the live axle disco, as well as quite good on road behavoiur, I reckon a D2 diesel is the go. My budgets around 20k, seems like I can get a well maintained one of these with under 120k.

Obviously getting the service history is number one importance, but is there any thing I should look for specifically? The cooling system problem with the expansion tank, is this still a d2 problem? Is there anything I should look for if the things been doing a lot of towing. I gather the autos are pretty sturdy but what about the transfer case?

Probably a stupid question but is it worthwhile/possible to fit a part time 4wd kit to these (i.e FWH and 2wd kit)

Finally, anyone care to give their opinion on the best of D2's, eg 01 ES diesel etc.

Cheers and thanks for your time.

Nutshell stuff as there has been a lot of discussion already, and all in my opinion as an owner.

They are an excellent vehicle, but they do need to be maintained. The TD5 isn't without fault at all, but it is proving to be a good motor - but make sure someone has loctited the oil pump bolt.

ACE suspension is outstanding - worth every cent. On road it maintains a flat car when in corners and the handling is excellent. Offroad it will relax the swaybars and give you better articulation for even better performance.

You may also find SLS (self levelling rear air suspension) a good setup if doing a lot of towing - though this generally only came with 7 seat packs unless optioned.

Cooling system? Are you sure this is a D2 thing? The cooling system on these are pretty good.

The autos are good also, they can fault into limp on the odd occasion, turn off, turn on to clear. Its important that if you're offroading it in the mud that you clean the radiator pack as the Auto cooler is in the middle at the bottom. If you don't let the ZF overheat then it will be reliable - if you're doing a lot of towing then I'd get an additional cooler from Davis Performance Landys.

Transfer..... the LT230 transfer is probably the strongest part of the vehicle.

I wouldn't fit a p/t kit, I don't believe there are any gains and I'm not sure if the D2 hubs will even allow this.

I think the best D2's were the face lifts and then approx 2000-2001. I have ommitted the approx 02's due to no centre diff lock for 4WDing, and the 99's based only on them being the initial batch.

If you do buy then sus out the following:
*Replace the front propshafts unis with greasable items and make sure these are serviced with the car.

*Have somebody remove the sump and reloctite the oil pump bolt.

*For towing I would recommend a high pressure ATF cooler (see DPL)

    *Service history

It sounds like you've done some good searching already, though there is a heap of discussion on a lot of this.
    Cheers

If your Pajero is one of these:

I would have to think twice about your decision.

Yes in the off-road capability the DII is superior to the Paj, however you need to keep the maintenance up to the DII and is something that the Paj can often go without.

If you do go to the DII, make sure you acquire one with the centre diff lock as part of the controls in the cabin. Some of the early DII, Land Rover decided not to include the CDL control relying on the traction control even though the CDL was fitted inside the gearboox. (This was corrected in the later DII.)

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

The 99-approx somewhere late 01 can be retrofitted with a factory CDL lever, though the late 01-02 didn't have this facility on the trasfer box to be able to do this.

I would imagine a Series 1 Pajero would be the first model - the square one. Some of these were V6 IIRC. The one above is a later(ish) Pajero.

ummmm...fit an engine saver as the engine temperature guage does not always tell the full story....do a search there are heaps of threads on it.

The rest has been said, and always use a specialist LR repairer, for any servicing or repairs,or if you have the confidence do it yourself.

    Good luck

Yep, thats the Paj we have, wheel up and stuck.

I guess the reason we're looking at a Disco is that its something the average 4wder looks at with ignorant distaste. Its the reason we've got a Paj and a Navara at the moment, because everyone thinks the're crap. Most people who bag them have never owned one and probably drive something that I've driven past and snatched or winched to safety. Or towed home.

Thanks Slunnie, and all the other repliers, your tips were appreciated.

We drove an s1 today ( a rough one at that), the cook hadn't driven a disco before and she wanted to get a feel for it. She was impressed, particularly with the lack of body roll, the quietness, and the general way it was to drive. She liked the room inside too, better than the Paj, although she still thought it felt a bit doughy handling wise compared to the Paj.

She did say it made a Patrol feel pretty bloody big though.

The one thing she didn't like was the lack of power.

These are all things that can be overcome, the ACE is something i'm keen to try, and the d2's have more go it seems.

The servicing/maintenance thing is big concern, and really the only thing holding me back. The nearest Landy dealer is 280kms away. Our Paj and Navara get a fair pizzling and often the servicing gets a bit pushed because of time constraints.
Given that we've had 200k out of the diesel Nav and 300k out of the Paj, with no more trouble than a cracked exhaust manifold and O2 sensor fail, I'd have to say we've had a great run.

But we do push them to the limits of good maintenance and I get the feeling this is not all that wise a thing to do with diesel Landys.

Are the petrol ones as temperamental?

    Thanks again for your time,

    Cheers.
