Good to hear that you have a good result so far ... Time will tell if it is a permanent solution so I look forward to regular updates

Long overdue update to the saga
Well they do say better late than never!
I though I had better update my post I started over 2 years ago.
So, I had the liners pinned and the rattle went away and I had no issues for about 4 -5 months. As some people warned, (and the Range-Rov mechanic by the way) there was a bigger issue lurking in the background!
I had about 4 months of trouble free motoring until my wife was driving the disco and it overheated one day. It was found that my radiator was 50% blocked internally and the thermostat had jammed. These issues were repaired (new thermostat and cleaned out radiator) however, my motor soon started to seem to boil even before the motor was up to temperature. What was happening, was that combustion gases were getting behind the loose cylinder liner and pressurising the cooling system through the crack in the cylinder bore to the water gallery. My feeling is that the crack in the block probably happened first, relaxing the cylinder bore ID, causing the liner to come loose (not that I've ever seen the temp guage move much above half way). The symptoms of the crack for some reason took 4 months to become obvious. So at this point I was left with no choice but to replace my motor!
I decided to get a reconditioned high comp 4.6 short block motor with stepped liners (top hat liners) from Triumph Rover in SA. Actually, TRS organised to freight the vehicle from Melbourne, do the complete engine swap and freight back for about $8.5k.
So unfortunately an expensive excercise, however I now have a disco that is a joy to drive (heaps more torque and effortless overtaking power
) and have the peace of mind nowing that it shouldn't happen again (because of the stepped liners)
So my conclusion to this experience is:
1. Always make sure your cooling system is in top condition.
2. If you have a slipped liner, pinning the liners might buy you some time, however, loose liners are usually an indication of a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.
Cheers,
Russ
