    Inhibitor Switch or Oil in the Injector Harness?

    Hi guys,
    I'm about to buy a new inhibitor switch to hopefully eliminate the S&M dash lights doing their dance almost everytime we start the car and thus needing to switch off and restart a zillion times every morning well actually it's SWMBO.... which could make this terminal (for the Dsco) if I cant fix it pretty soon..... and PERMANENTLY.
    My problem is that I've read a thread here, or maybe it was a a reply from someone who actually just believes what he's told by a stealer, where a stealer told an owner that it is oil in the injector harness. Either fix is not cheap..... the inhibitor switch is about $400 plus fitting, and I think the harness is about $200.
    In the end, I dont want to spend the $$$ on the wrong one and still have the problem....HELP PLEASE!

    Oil in the harness is easy to check for: remove the connectors from the ecu (after disconnecting the battery) and if there is no oil at the connectors then that's not your vehicle's problem. If there is oil, that may or may not be the cause of the problem but will need attention anywy.

    Not strictly true. If the oils gone as far as the ECU then its bad karma all round. The best way to check if this is the issue is to unplug the injector harness at the front driver's side of the engine and check that plug. If there's oil in the injector loom causing an issue it will be visible there. If its real bad, then check back at the ECU.

    The M+S flashing, first thing to do is check the harness on the passenger's side of the transmission and give it a good clean up.

    Alan, give AMV a call on 98709984 and have a chat to Greg Ellis.

    He may have a clue or even two. And perhaps a replacement part a righter (?) price.

    That sounds a lot like the inhibitor switch. Do you have all of the gear selections reading on the dash? I would also get under and check the adjustment of the switch also which you can do my loosening the switch and rotating it slightly while checking the dash reading and its ability to start while in Park......... I really don't think it will be oil in the harness. As suggested above, AMV have a very good ZF guru in there (Greg) who will probably diagnose it over the phone, and if you need parts there are a number of supplier who can probably supply you with cheaper used parts.

    Thanks Slunnie (and all the others of course) I have noticed that Neutral doesn;t show on the dash. I'll get under there tomorow night and play with the adjustment.

    Oil at the head connector wont cause problems and there is no guarantee that oil that has reached the ecu connector is currently causing problems (I've seen it on a friend's vehicle, dripping oil down inside the mudguard!), but maybe mostly it does.
