Unhappy Help rear diff disco 2A

    I have a 2003 model Td5
I have paid the local landrover guy in hervey bay to service the vehicle & check it over. I have had him do a few mods/ repaires for minor problems. ie oil into wiring loom on injectors etc. most of these things I have heard of before. so Im not to worried I would like a reliable vehicle, having just bought it i expected a couple of typical landrover niggles. He has told me this is fairly common in landrovers
the local landrover guy in hervey bay says that the pin that holds the spider gears in the diff is broken & the the part it goes into is extremely worn & elongated. he also says this is fairly common in landrovers. I had not heard of this problem before. I then went back to the mob I bought it from in brisbane & they have told me if it not making loads of noise or stopping the vehicle from driving its not a warranty problem only fair wear & tear. he said that I would have to come back to brisbane for him to check it before even considering a warranty claim. I dont mind getting a second opinion, but the dealer is 350klms away & the wife only just had a baby last week. it would mean staying over in brisbane, (Paying fuel there & back, accomadation & 2 days off work) that doesnt sound reasonable to me. The other option is doing without my car for a few days (not easy with a newborn) & get it trucked down to brisbane. the dealer told me this would cost me $198 each way. the repair quote was only $1100

    any opinions out there?

That seems like a very unusual checkover. Why would they be checking the rear diff that thoroughly if there was no noise evident? If the pin was broken, you'd certainly know about it.

Sounds a bit sus to me.

I asked him to change all the fluids, & he said the rear diff oil came out very silvery due to the high metal content. which made him look into the diff for any damage, He said it was clearly visible through the drain hole with a torch. (If you rotate the diff to the correct position) He did offer to show me the damage, (required new oil being drained) & did show me similar dammage on another diff centre out of a differant d2

I wouldn't drive it 350kms with the pin broken as you're likely to get stranded and wreck the crown wheel and/or pinion gear at the same time.
You might find a s/h diff centre is the cheapest option - I've seen them from as low as $50.

I believe you, Im actually thinking of going with an arb locker, as they are much stronger. (and have other benefits traction wise)
but the issue is more the dealer & not being intrested in the warranty.
I was thinking more about advise on what to do, I have only had the car 3 months & allready spent several thousand dollars on so called no warranty issues.

How many Km's has this Disco done..

An issue like that does sound sus to me unless its done a lot of Km's or a lot of hard work.

Let me get this right. Please point out any of the following that are wrong:

You've had the car for 3 months & driven it regularly.

You haven't noticed any strange noises from the driveline at all.

The repairer is saying that the cross shaft is broken.

If all the above is correct, then I feel something is very wrong with the repairer.
I have broken 2 cross shafts in the last 6 months - I couldn't drive more than 50m without hearing horrible grinding noises (and that's with the centre diff lock enagaged to get some drive at all).

If you are going to fit a locker to it then why not just fit a locker to it and be a happy camper

    yes that is correct.
these guys are actually recommended on the forum

Queensland - Australian Land Rover Owners

they seem very genuine & honest.

the disco has done 100k klms, not many. It was a 1 onwer vehicle, previously owned by a brisbane doctor. All of the sevice history (every 10k) was with the same brisbane dealer who sold the car origionaly. It is in very good condition overall. these people have giving me a written record of the fault & a quote, not expecting to even do the work as it is a warranty issue. Im not really sure what it is that you think they have to gain
