Thread: locking up the D2

The D2 is a different rear end to the other Landys. Its a semi-floating axle setup unlike the more common full floaters. Because of this you wont be able to remove and replace the rear axle in the bush, you need to press it out. You're much better off having the axles fitted when you do the diff or when you get them and knowing that you'd be really unlucky to break them in the bush. The D2 is axles only, they dont have drive flanges.

As Slunnie has said, get the axles when your get the locker, it's not only cheaper this way it saves a lot of buggerising around, also if your current crown wheel and pinion are OK don't replace them.

Sorry to hear about the trip mate! Can you share with us whether the rear diff had started to wine or make funny sounds, whether there was excessive lash, whether the diff had had a hard time, and the ks on the diff.

i was intending on doing axles at the same time but id been talked into letting the existing ones brake before replacing them. as for the dif itself it had done 218k didnt make any noise and the car had never seen dirt before 215k. as for wear i do have to admit i had been a bit foolish and was doing doughnuts in it about 2 weeks ago in a grassy paddock. (it does them well with the centre in and TC off) on the road tires.

so my mechanic reckons that that would have fatigued it and when i clicked low low it just snapped. i am now stuck as to whether i sell it and buy a 110ute or pioneer on and spend many many more thousands on it...

Donuts will do it. Thats not the cars fault.

I really wouldn't wait until the axle breaks. They break in the worst possible bit of track where you really dont want to break and are a prize PITA to extract/recover. The factory axles break clean usually, but if they dont they'll send shrapnel through the axle housing and diff. If the axle on the D2 snaps at the stub you also wont be able to retain the wheel on the axle.





The D2 diff and axles are about the same strength, so if you've popped the diff, then you may very well have already twisted the axle also.

so when i do do the axles and centre, is the stock crown wheel and pinion if its in good nick going to stand up to the locker, and also will i need to do anything with the tail shaft?

You can break anything if you try hard enough, but the standard CW/P's are normally fine, espeically if you've not done anything to outrageous with the tyre type and size. Tailshaft I'd also just leave unless you keep breaking the rubber donuts, if so then change it to a 4 bolt pinion flange and Uni-uni propshaft.

ok well my 2nd standard dif is on it way out and its time to bite the bullet and put a locker in the rear of the disco,

but i was going to run the standard axles for the time being as i dont have the extra $750 required to fit the axles,

will the standard axles stand up to the locker for a couple months?
