Can't Unlock Rear Door on D2

Seems there's a gremlin in my 2000D2's rear door lock. Can hear locking/locking of rear door motor and mechanism. Lock button moves up and down but can't budge rear door when lifting door handle. I can't open door manually either from the boot space. Any clues? Thanks. Has been a bit dodgy for a while now - previously intermittent but now seems truly stuck.

I have the same problem with the wifes D2. you need to take the door trim off and there is adjustment on one of the rods that goes to the actuator from memory. I have been meaning to do it for some time as it is rather annoying. The D1 used to do it too, but I wasn't so lazy back then and fixed it quick smart.

Did exactly the same thing on mine, once you get the door open, just spray lubricant around the locks etc regularly..if you can get the door open, I didn't remove the trim, but it unlocked itself after a day...but i did give it several 'man taps', never did it again after that.

    Ray,
Yes - have tried the wait a day, the 'man taps', to no avail.... (yet 14yo son reckons he opened it with a shove whilst using electronic opener..mmm)

It appears to be just another one of the myriad of inherent faults that these vehicles have!

You will find the problem stems from the rear tyres. It places extra loads on the door and with bumps etc the door flexes and sucks in dust. The dust gums up the door mechanism. I have had mine stick a few times doing the simpson and flinders (basically anywhere dusty).

I usually get it open by whacking the locking mechanism (with a rubber mallet) to loosen the dust. If you spray the lock with graphite dust you will find it keeps the lock well lubricated. You do need to block out the lock regularly if out bush.

I have a hose with a blow gun on one end and a tyre stem attachment on the other. You connect it to the rear tyre and blow the dust out of the mechanism.

I reckon McDisco's on the money. I think your son also has a point with mine it seemed to open if I shoved it in and up whilst gripping the opening mechanism at the same time... In the end it packed up after a very dusty trip (still getting dust out of speakers!) and eventually opened after much locking, unlocking, man taps, swearing, shoving... half a can of WD40 later plus moving the locking mechanism open/closed without shutting the door it then freed up again. more wd40 and opening & closing door for real mean it's nice and free now... long may it last. Had similar sticking from dust on drivers door also; same fix.

I specifically don't use WD40 or similar cause when this stuff dries out it dries a bit sticky or gummy. This attracts the dust.

If you use graphite powder this shouldn't allow the dust to gum up the mechanism.

Hi all with Series2 Disco rear door lock faults. This is a known problem.

If the symptons are that the FOB appears to unluck the rear door and the button on the inside actually goes up but the door wont open from outside or inside, then the problem more than likely is with the child proof lock.

To open the door you will have to firstly (from inside the car) remove the rear door seal out of the way around the lock mechanism, then jiggle the child proof lock mechanism up / down slightly with a hooked bit of wire or a scriber or similar and presto, the door operates again. The easiest way to find the physical location is by looking at another S2 Disco, measuring it and marking this on your car. It is actually behind a rubber block, making it a bit more difficult to access.

This first happened to us while we were on holidays in the middle of nowhere. 20kms of corrugated roads also clears the problem

There is a small spring in this mechanism which weakens with time.

The problem seems to occur more often when trying to open the rear door whilst it is still locked.

    Erich.
