Was just wondering if anyone can give any advice as to what the prob may be and how much it looks like i'm up for.

First of all check for a delaminated/ burst intercooler hose. The ones from the turbo to the IC on the passenger side are the prime offenders. Common problem.
Also the wastegate modulator (Not on Defenders) valve can fail, this is a small electrically controlled valve bolted to the side of the AC bracket, connected by small hoses to wastegate, air inlet and high pressure side of turbo. (This valve can be bypassed to test. Run a new piece of small ID hose from wastgate directly to the high pressure side of turbo.)
The wastegate can stick closed, giving the ECU an overboost signal and momentarily cutting fuel, but this generally occurrs at higher RPM and under bigger loads
Finally, A Faulty MAF can cause a lack of power but usually not that badly.
