Question Has any one used MLR land rover in docklands Melbourne

    Hi all.

I am a new member looking at buying a 1999 Disco TD5 Auto and I am looking for somewhere near South Melbourne to do a Pre purchase inspection.

Has any one had any dealings with Melbourne Land Rovers In docklands? If so, are they any good or should I steer clear of them?

Is ther anyone else that people have used (dosen't have to be a landrover dealer)? I would prefer to take it to a specialist than a dealer.

Do TD5 discos have any problems at the 180k mark that should be looked for in an inspection?

Are there any indications (like stickers) for things like wiring looms replacment? If so where would the be located on the vehicle?

Do the TD5 engines have a timing belt or is it a chain? at what Km's is it usually replaced?

I have found this forum very helpfull so far. Keep up the good work.

    Thanking you all in advance

I bought my Defender and traded my D2 with them and they were very professional and very helpful. The only other LR specialists I've dealt with are all over eastern Melbourne way. I think Les Richmond would be the only one close to Port Melbourne.

The Td5 has a timing chain. Any recalls that have been done (should) have a sticker on door pillar.

I am not sure they are all knowledgeable on landies - I understand they recently diagnosed a problem in an early freelander diesel as the fuel tank lift pump and quoted on its replacement - the problem was that the car does not have a fuel lift pump.

If any wiring loom has been replaced, it would probably only be the engine injector harness as they are known to often develop a leak though the connector at the front of the head. But its really nothing to worry about, some get to leak and others don't, and they're quite simple and not particularly expensive to replace. Mine's still OK at 190K.

Here are a few items that another dealer never picked up on on my 2001 D2 TD5 owned since new. I've since taken to servicing it myself:
    • Leaking Fuel Pressure Regulator (many posts on this here)
    • Soft/Delaminated hoses between turbo and intercooler
    • Has the intercooler ever been flushed to clean out oil deposits?
    • Clogged MAP sensor on intake manifold (can be taken out and cleaned with CO contact cleaner)
I assume that these items would possibly be worse on a 1999 D2 and I would also get the injector harness and injector-ECU harness checked for oil.

When I inquired about a pre-purchase for my D1 back in Sept, MLR said they no longer do pre-purchase inspections due to a number of problems with people coming back to them afterwards about things that weren't found.

I didn't find anyone around the Port Melbourne area that so please let everyone know if you do.

I found them to be very helpful in sharing their mechanical expertise but I wont take my LR there to get fixed.

I did once take my FL to them and cost me $120 to get TC, HDC and ABS lights on fixed. Well 10 minutes after i left there the problem came back. Looked at the wiring diagram on RAVE CD, put a jumper lead to one of the pin on starter switch and problem gone. Left the jumper lead there for few months untill I replaced $30 odd new starter switch.
