    Help Needed

    Hello All,
    I own a 2002-3 Disco Sii Petrol V8 with 114384 Km.
    Problem - Transmission, Handbrake Assy.
The M,S warning lights first started October of last year (once), then November (twice) and again December (once) and now more regularly April, May. It was looked at by LandRover earlier this year with no faults found and it was explained to me that this was a regular problem with these vehicles. The handbrake has been playing up recently; the handbrake handle will not lower to its rest position without manipulation. Driving home from work Thursday 7th May 10km's from door to door, stopped at traffic lights and the handbrake release knob fell off of handle, M,S warning lights illuminated on dash, no time to reset and vehicle sluggish on takeoff, handbrake handle hot to the touch. I pulled over reset motor, nursed vehicle home last 2km's, rang my mate Aussie and I took vehicle to his shop with no further incident. What has just happened? Is there a link between Transmission and Handbrake? Electrical fault? What’s the cost to rectify – complete Handbrake assembly, Recondition Transmission?

I am no mechanic so I hope someone more qualified comes along to help you. In my experience the M and S lights coming on are an indication that something has triggered the limp home mode. However when this has occured to me the lights have cleared the next time the ingnition has been cycled ON/OFF. This has not caused any lasting symptom.

The handbrake issues I believe to be unrelated to the M&S lights unless your handbrake is dragging and the additional load on the transmission is causing overheating of the transmission fluid. Easy enough to check as the drum would be getting hot after driving any distance and your fuel economy would be poor. To check the handbrake you can just lift a back wheel with the gearbox in Neutral and try to spin the lifted wheel you should feel and possibly hear the dragging on the handbrake. If that is the problem then it could be due to crap collecting in the drum, more likely to be an issue if you have been off road and have done some mud work. Or your shoes need adjustment. I can't imagine the rachet release button coming off having much to do with this however I have not had it happen to me.

Good luck I hope one of the guys that do this stuff for a living comes along and provides you with more definitive advice.

    Pedro ...

Does his D2 handbrake ... have

Brake shoes on drum via a cable pull lever?
Calliper on Disc via a cable pull lever?
    Are they electrical activated?

Wouldn't it be a case of a "sticky handbrake" = "need to clean and lube all part assembly's" ??
