There's been a couple of instances where there was a broken wire at an injector connector, which was fixed by re-soldering the broken wire. A fault should have been logged for the particular injector if this has happened.
Series 2 Disco, TD5 Automatic
Driving home on Sunday after while I felt a vibration, all seemed normal, no lights on, not a noticeable drop in power, speed remained the same. Slowed down in to a town to drop some one off and whilst reversing in to their drive way felt a definite ‘shudder’.
I didn’t say anything so I didn’t alarm my honey but she picked it up. I actually thought it was the auto gearbox. Its due, maybe overdue for an oil change and having one today.
I shut him down and when started up again, all was normal. We dropped some one else off and the next 70km were normal as well. That was Sunday and my honey drive on Monday and Tuesday and didn’t experience it.
Anyway on the way home yesterday, all of 6 KM, just before I got home it started again. I left it idling, pulled the bonnet (that’s what blokes do right!?) but there is nothing to see.
I shut him down, locked him all up then came back a minute or so later and restarted, all was good.
To me it seems like a cylinder is not firing, Diesel burns on compression and the engine is still running so there must not be any fuel getting in to the cylinder.
Its at the stealership now getting the autobox and transfer box oil changed (that’s another story) and I asked them to print me out a list of the faults stored (I know there are some because the chimes go off some times.
When I am cleaning and have the cover off the engine I disconnect the injector loom to check for oil, there was no sign of oil last time I looked, about 8 weeks ago I think.
The battery got replaced last August and we don’t have any extra loads on it, its just a standard disco.
I have done a search and will look at the whole loom again, but if there is no oil at the rocker cover plug one can assume there is no oil anyway where else?
So my questions are :-
Which cylinder?
Is it worth pulling the rocker cover and looking at the loom inside?
If I do identify the cylinder and install a replacement injector, is it plug and play or does it need test book? (It think it needs test book or similar)
Will the diagnostic report show up a faulty injector?
Will running some injector cleaner through it be worth while?
What sort of / brand injector cleaner?
What are my other options?
Have I got this right or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thanks in advance for your help

Pull the ECU out(next to the battery)
Is it leaking oil from the RED plug???
If so do a search on "Oil in the loom"
It causes LOTS of silly issues!!!!

I checked the red plug connecting to the engine ECU and the plug coming from the cam shaft cover, both had oil, quite a lot in my opinion.
I am sure that when I last looked at the small plug there was no oil on it and it wasnt too long ago, 2 months?
so thanks for the replies, I shall investigate the oil in loom thing etc
at least at the moment I am not worried about the injectors them selves!

I looked there but my intrepretation was for more for diagnosis, not a step by step with pictures
thanks for your help in compiling the Good Oil though, I did read it and gained more knowledge

Ewe should only need to replace the harness that is inside the rocker cover(around $200 EASY DIY JO.Its possible to flush the oil from the rest of the loom with time and metho spirits saving THOUSANDS of $$$$$

Hay, changed out the harness this morning before work, all good so far
I realised the actual problme, the plug is the worng way around, if the female part was coming out of the cover, the oil may by pass the o-rings but then it woudl drip to the atmosphere instead of in to the plug and loom, never mind
all is good
