if you mean these holes either side of the tube..........

Then NO they will not withstand a recovery, there for safety chains for when towing only.

No dont use them. They are only there to attached chains when towing and shouldnt be used for recovery. You can store you shackles there but dont recover of them.

If you have a towbar inset the snatch strap into the receiver and secure it with the pin. Much safer.

Bow shackles are fine, just make sure they are marked and rated. They come in 3.2 and 4.7 ton rating. Most 4wd stores sell them for around $15 buck. Do not...I repeat do not buy the galvanised ones from Bunnings or other hardware places.

How about if I remove the tow ball and put D-Shackle through the hole?

    well,, you could,,
but repeated use will damage the hole the ball sits in.

just using the strap eye and receiver pin is much simpler.

Going out on a bit of a limb here sugesting you are rather inexperienced with 4wding. Maybe you could contact/join a local 4wd club or find someoe who does 4wd training. Recovery is basic 4wd 101 but it can be very dangerous and you don't want to get it wrong. Good advice here but there is so much more you need to know. My 2 cents.

FWIW & it may be that I've just become guilty of repeating a myth but I have seen mention before of the pin bending when being used as the location for a recovery strap & becoming impossible to remove. I would go for the block & shackle as shown above or a rated hook bolted into a heavy wall section of RHS & located in the receiver socket in a like fashion. I think an outfit called Outback Ideas makes or used to make these.

Its already been said a few times but never ever use the towball for any recovery/towing, if that snaps it becomes a bullet (and a bloody heavy one at that). I suppose the same thing goes for any kind of shackle aswell.

Safest bet is to buy a removable hitch pin from an auto shop and feed your snatch strap straight into that. My Disco had the hitch bolted in but I bought the universal pin with retaining clip and replaced it.

    Mate,,
Once Upon a Time Up The Beach,,

I snatched a fully laden 109 safari with
trailer (3 Ton?) over a berm to get off the beach, (for some reason the 4.4 only had 2nd and 4th gear??)
    3 straps joined, two goes,
one drive away, one full strap length in low second,,,

    and I got him off,,
    (no vids)

I cannot conceive how you could bend the pin,,,
