Modifying an auto, manual gear selection

I tried searching but found nothing. Someone mentioned the auto in my 2003 TD5 D2 is the same as the 7 series BMW which offers manual selection of the gears just like my D2 does when in low range with the sport button engaged.

Does anyone know if there is any sort of upgrade or modification to allow me to have that manual option available instead of the silly sports mode when in high range ??

hmm, AFAIK the difference is the box will hold the gear selected,,

what, exactly did you want it to do?

    Thanks for your reply !

Have it hold the gear a bit longer without kicking back basically. The electronics allow you to do it in low range so surely it's just a chip program away ???

For me I'd rather be in 4th at 3/4 throttle at 100k's (2300rpm) up a hill (small box trailer with a bit of furniture) than have it kickback to 3rd at higher rpm.

I guess it just makes more sense to have that option rather than the sports mode.

    yyesssss,,
but if its not holding 100kays, causing you to increase pedal pressure, at some predetermined point the box will kick down to 3rd unlocked.
Its only doing what youre asking it to do,,

if you are quite happy to lose speed (no increase in pedal pressure) and rollover the hill, (ASSUMING its that small a hill) it will hold 4th.

Mine HATES running at 100 with the camper on the back,,
    but add 15-20 kays and

Fair point, but a manual one would easily pull over in top gear at 100 with the little extra pedal pressure, and the hills are pretty long, so running at 100ks at higher rpms in 3rd doesn't make sense would it would do the same in 4th if I could just keep it in top gear. It feels like I should slow to 80 to keep the revs down and then every other bugger hates you for slowing down the traffic.

It will hold 100 in 4th until you just press the pedal that tiny bit too far then jumps back to 3rd. We have a diesel golf, and cruising on the highway is just easy with it locked in 6th at h'way speeds. Even is 6th it will accelerate up the same hills so power or labouring the engine isn't an issue, but if you leave it in auto mode it jumps down gears, more like it set up for petrol engines.

Besides, who was the dill that put a sports mode switch on a diesel 4wd. It would just make more sense to have something that was actually useful like a manual selector instead !!

I agree, would be nice to have a manual selection ability – for the reason above and the other thing the c**ps me is driving through a residential estate or dawdling along the waterfront at 40-50km. The auto will not change up and wants to do over 2200rpm at a steady 40km on flat road. We have a Diesel Golf too – it will come in and out of a housing estate at 1100rpm which is nice at 3am.

drop the shifter back to 3rd, at over 75 od k's the torque convertor will lock up in 3rd and drop the revs down, and on an incline will end up at lower revs in some instances than in 4th without torque convertor locked up. whenever i come up to a hill i drop back to 3rd with plenty of time for the torque convertor to lock up and rarely ever have to floor it unless it is a really sizeable hill.
