Thread: Shock Absorbers

being new to ace and sls, i can confirm that the ace system dose affect the handling of the car, bit hard to explain, sort of like a boat cresting over waves diagonally on certina surfaces, but for the most its perfect.

to check the shocks push or rock the car one end at a time, when you let go the body should stop bouncing very quickly and abruptly, it shouldnt keep rolling and moving.

are the shock's original or aftermarket? are they black or a different colour?
the standard shocks are good but not great, there are better ones on the market.

The Shocks are Black and i beleive are still the original ones.
This is the major reason for asking what tell tail signs i should look for in a dead shock absorber?
I tried pointing the car slightly downhill then pulling the handbrake i noticed the car ways back & forth but i can't make out if it's the shocks or the anti roll bar acting? "the discovery has a complex suspension system"
The car was originaly owned by an old man so it's in pretty good condition for a 2001 model also it had 75000Km on the clock. regular checkups where all done by LR dealer and had them registered in the log book.
What Shocks would you suggest to fit, ie make and model number?

i know this is a bit ass about face but you can tell when your shocks are stuffed, usually after you've put new ones in.

Stupid i know, but the point is the D2's suspension while including ACE, still shows signs of wear. Because it happens so gradually, you won't notice untill their replaced, or you got the car second hand and have no point of reference for the feeling of new shocks.

How many and what sort of K's have you done.
Can you compare it to another members ride with newer shocks?

My advice, for the price of new shocks, just stick them in. You won't be dissapointed.

To tell if your shocks are stuffed, rock the car up and down on each corner. When you stop pushing on the car it should stop bouncing within two oscillations, ie down up down and come to rest. I believe this is how they are checked for roadworthy in Vic.

P.S I'm not sure but the A.C.E system is probably disabled when there is a door open/ and or ignition is off? Someone on here might know the logic for the A.C.E system to verify this?

Hi Vince,
I have just changed the suspension in my Disco, I went for a 2" lift with Dobinson coils up front and Tombie's SLS kit in rear and Bilstein shocks all around. The difference is amazing, my shocks were originals they had done twice as much distance as yours and were completely stuffed. I can highly recommend Bilstein Shock absorbers if you wish to spend a few extra dollars regardless of whether you lift the suspension or not.
