Here is how to avoid this happening. When you select "R" and reverse back, make sure you are at a complete halt before selecting a forward gear. Limp mode comes about through confusion and people trying to select drive whilst they are still rolling back.

Complete stop, then select a forward gear = no troubles.

    Thanks Captcav,

Mine is far beyond that I'm afraid! Currently the only way I can stop the gearbox freaking out is to start in N, quickly shift to P then back to R to reverse. Or to go forward Start in N with a bit of backward pressure on the shifter then quickly shift to 3 and then up to D. Even that doesn't always work!

Anyway inhibitor switch is ordered and hopefully on it's way!

I was told before taking a d2 for a drive at a dealer that I had to go to park before reverse, then again before drive. I didn't and the car went ok. The battery had been completely flat before I drove it (had to be jump started). Perhaps the flat batt reset/cleared the fault?

Well they moved the switch and now it starts in "P" but the M & S lights come on now everytime I select "R" and "D" (and for that privilege I paid $200!).
I hope they popped off the gear selector surround & removed all the crap that accumulates under there first. The D2 is notorious for getting the odd coin stuck under there & causing that same problem.

    Question

Had this happen to me the otherday, however the M&S started flashing right after all the check lights went out and before it was even started.
Would only select reverse with all forward gears resulting in shift indicator lights flashing and as though the trans was locked. Sooooooo after reversing out of my drive, reversing down the cul de sac, back up the road and reversing into my driveway, turned it on and off a few times with no change.
Pressed the mode switch a few times with the engine off and all of a sudden it cleared.
Hadn't been wet, hadn't had A/C on so bit of a mystery apart from the fact I was cleaning inside the previous day and had ignition on while wiping down the shift console so may have "on off'd" the switch a few times.
But as I said, the fact the trannie locked in forward, haven't heard of anyone stating this before....

    Cheers

When the M&S lights are displayed, the transmission goes into limp mode which means that it's locked in 3rd gear. I assume this is what you're referring to.

Nope! Locked as in solid! No forward at all. Only had reverse.

Not sure about the "locked" bit.. but I used to get the "M" and "S" problem a lot. mine seemed related to battery condition.. I had a flat bat and got the RACQ out to give me a start, then gave it a really long drive and since then.. haven't had a prob. It's probably worth giving your battery a charge just to eliminate low bat voltage as a possibility.
