TD5 heating up, blowing white smoke

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that my TD5 has started blowing a big puff of white smoke on cold start.

A week or so ago (when the cold snap hit us here in Melbourne!), we lost the heater - by which I mean we'd turn the heater controls all the way up but the system would either blow cold air or would only intermittently blow warm air.

Then on Sunday I was towing a load of junk to the tip and the temperature gauge (which always sits dead on half way up the dial) started to climb and the car lost power. It seemed to cool down a little as I backed off and trundled along in 1 for a bit before stopping for a rest.

No noticeable drop in coolant level.

I'm fearing head issues ... but would love some reassurance that it might be a simple problem!!

(Its going in to AMV in Ringwood tomorrow, so I'll find out soon enough, I suppose!)

    Doesnt sound good.
Check to see if the eletric booster fan is running all the time when the motor is running with the climate control off.If it is the ECU has detected an overheat and will run the fan automatically till the fault is cleared.
The power drop also indicates the ECU protecting the motor.
At running temp CAREFULLY squeeze the top radiator hoses,do they feel like there under alot of pressure???? Indicates exhaust gas pressurizing the system.
Put a small plastic drink bottle over the drain tube on the header bottle, monitor it for spitting coolant out.It could be air pockets forming in the cooling system are masking the loss of coolant.
Other possible causes, stuck thermostat or faulty radiator cap.
Unfortunately head gasket failures are common on the TD5,mine has been done.
    Goodluck

    Thanks mate,

Turned out to be a stuffed viscous fan. Replacement supplied and fitted by AMV for a very reasonable price.

Fingers crossed that's the worst of it for a while!

Sorry didnt mean to hijack the thread.

Mine done this. Still weeping coolant eventhough I put two clamps on the top hose to engine. What does it mean when you said "Indicates exhaust gas pressurizing the system" ?? Do you think there is still air pocket in the system? Thanks

I could see how a stuffed viscous fan could cause high temps on heavy load such as when you are towing - that makes sense. But that's not going to be the cause of your heater issues! Are your brakes working correctly? I wonder if the D2 has vacuum operated heater flaps - perhaps you might have a vacuum leak there.

Hmmm ... not sure. In any event the heater now works - maybe the ECU was shutting something down with the higher temps? Before the repair I had noticed that the booster fans would stay on for a minute or two after I shut off the ignition ... I assume these were disspitaing the extra heat but perhaps the system had gone out of whack as a result?

    Hi Dearot
If your head gasket is leaking combustion gasses into the cooling system(rather than the head gasket leaking water into the engine) it will force coolant out thru the overflow on the header tank.As the gasses can remain traped in other areas of the cooling system,ie heater circuit it masks the loss of coolant forced out of the overflow. The plastic bottle catcher is the best way to monitor this loss.
    bviking.
I would be looking at the catch bottle,I cant see a viscous fan fixing what you reported. The heater issue is a definate warning signal.
    GOODLUCK GUYS!!!
