    Disco2 TD5

TD5 started to run rough under load. Struggles to get beyond 80 KPH when driven up even the slightest of incline.
Took it to trusty LR Mechanic who swore black & blue that it was injector harness. $250 later I drove off in a hurry to get back to work.
Car runs just as bad as it did before the harness was changed over. Didn't make one iota of difference.
Will take it back tomorrow but I work in West Sunshine & mechanic is in Mornington which makes it difficult.
In the meantime I would appreciate it if any learned forum members have any other suggestions as to what might be the cause.
It feels just like driving a petrol engine with a couple of crook spark plugs.

    Hi Wodnee,

I can feel for you as I had a very similar problem that ended up being the turbocharger wastegate modulator. The car would feel like it was surging from about 2500 revs as it it wasn't firing on all cylinders (if my TD5 was a petrol engine). If this is the problem, what is happening is the modulator is mis-registering that the turbo is overboosting and the ECU is then attempting to fix it by momentarily killing the engine.

If you have access to a Nanocom you should get an error advising of the overboost. If this is the problem it is a simple fix of replacing the modulator or you may be lucky and find it is either a split or disconnected vacuum hose from either the modulator to the diaphragm on the top of the turbo or on the pipe running between the turbo and the intercooler.

I replaced this modulator and then found that the wastegate on the turbo stuck open. So be aware that there maybe a remote chance that this could be a symptom of the modulator packing it in or it might not. Both reasonably straight forward fixes my LR mechanic fixed for a $200 - $300 and now the car runs like a dream.

The only other possibility that I tried was to replace the MAF, which can cause a similar symptom, but in my case the modulator ended up being the root cause.

I hope this is of assistance.

One thing that could save a bit of money firstly, if you know someone with a TD5 and they are in agreement you could swap the modulators on the cars and test them out. Obviously swapping them back after.

All the best and by the way the modulator is about the six of a match box and is located on the side of the air-conditioning compressor or just underneath it on the compressor mount.

    Regards Tony

Apart from the rogh running it could be a serious leak between the turbo and inlet manififold.
Check if any of the hoses between the turbo and inlet manifold is not cracked or torn.
Loosing lots of boost has the same effect.
The engine will rev on no load and drive on level ground but any hill will slow you down drastically.

Did you hear a "whoosh" sound just before it happened?
Sounds like a petrol car turbo dump valve blowing off.

I dont have any experience of the above but has teh ECU connector been checked?
The Injector harness might have been changed but there could still be oil in teh ECU connector plug, clean that out with contact cleaner and cotton ear buds and it could be better.

Try to check all the possibilites remembering that the simplist solutions are usually the best

I am not dissing the other reply, just throwing an option in there

Another place to look at is the plug connecting up to the head.
My TD5's plug has the keep tabs broken offitch resulted in a lumpy idle and cutting out. Luckly while I was working on it.
A hefty cable tie fixed this. Just wrap it aroung the plug and valve cover.

Starting to wonder if mech knows what he's doing. So far, replaced airflow meter. Was showing 34CFM now up to over 50. Drove better, but still struggled to get up speed. Now mech says fuel pump pressure is down & ECU is corrupted & needs replacing. Seriously, how conceivable is it that all these components crap themselves at the same time??
Haven't picked up the car or got the bill yet.....guess it's gonna be a bit scarey!?

    Hi ,

Experienced the same issue earlier this year . Started with a leak in the fuel pressure regulator - smell of diesel around the bonnet ,and later fuel pump pressure dropped . Had to change both in the end .

    Unhappy Ouch

Well $2300 later & I have new fuel pump, airflow meter & "refurb" ECU.
Mech says ECU "upgraded" by a guy in Sydney called Davis. Anyone heard of him?

Anyway, the car pulls well & certainly packs more punch but so it should given the state it was in before hand. Trouble is, after driving my old LPG Patrol around for a few days it's hard to judge the improvement!

My concern now is that this is going to turn into one of those "pull a thread on your shirt" scenarios.

Coincidently now after having this work done, the cruise control now doesn't work & the temp guage doesn't get to even warm. I have tried to nut out if there is any connection to the work done. Mech now says the temp guage issue is "just the thermostat". It was working perfectly before the ECU was changed over.

BTW the old ECU had oil still draining out of it after 2 days!

Anyone know if there is any relationship between the temp guage & ECU??

    Hi Wodnee
Check the fuel pump as i had a similar problem and chased it for a long time and found that it was black crap all over the filters in the fuel pump.
I also have the Davis chip and the difference is quite noticeable I would recommend to any TD5 owner to have it done whether it be buy Davis or anyone else.
    Regards
    Doug

Yes the temp gauge is controlled through the ECU. Is your D2 an Auto? or a manual? The cruise control can probably be turned on, if it wasnt on already with a Nanocom or similar.

Is there a visible part number on the ECU's old and new?

Your mechanic is totally wrong about the thermostat affecting the gauge IMO
