Chipping a Td5 with 260k kms on the clock

    Hi All
I am considering getting my 99 Td5 D2 chipped. The plan is to get a flash able ecu, getting it chipped and the injector codes matched etc. But I am wondering whether it would be a sensible thing to do, considering the car has done 260 000kms. Now I am thinking of holding onto my D2 for a long time, and an engine rebuild would be in the pipeline eventually. Would be good to hear your thoughts...

Hendrik the old girls done some miles I'd leave it as is,I wouldn't try to get more power from it as it's still giving good service.

    Id back that theory.

the motor is ment to be good to 500K Km.

If theres a particular reason for the rechip (youve changed the intercooler/exhaust/EGR/ whatever else) and not just "I want more power" then it may be a good idea.

Well I do want it for more power obviously, but I am also after safer overtaking, as I am running bigger tyres. Now while I do not drive it everyday, I would like some more power, as sometimes in real hilly country, overtaking can be a bit risky sometimes. If I was going to get it chipped, I would only go mild, would it really put that much more stain on the engine? I have done the egr, and will change the intercooler hoses to silicon ones soon, and maybe ditch the center muffler, but does it really make that much of a difference?

if you really want to do it...

fit a pyro first (do a boost gauge while your at it)

that'll tell you just how hard you're working the donk.

I'm not a fan of chip upgrades on older engines but Its been done in the past with success and logically so long as youre particular donk has a happy history theres no reason it shouldnt be good.

The other big killer is you're definition of mild.

when I got big red chipped I asked for all that the engine could safely handle. Either he didnt hear the word safely or my definition of safe is excessively conservative.

Well I don't drive it like a hoon, I drive it conservatively trying to get as much out of a tank of fuel as possible. The car has a good history, I has driven highway kms all its life and service has been well kept up, which might not mean much, but it means it hasn't been idling in traffic all its life. By mild I mean just a little more just make overtaking a bit safer and not such a struggle to get up a hill on road.
But, I am also interested in what side effects chipping has, if it's gonna destroy my engine, it is not the way to go then. What problems have you had Dave?
    Thanks for all the advice

    problems?

The doc reckons the strain developed on my jawbone when I grin at the riceboys I outlaunch from the lights is going to cause stress fractures and the degree I have to rotate my neck to make sure they can see the grin is causing hyper extension injury to the muscles on the left side of my neck.

    seriously

I killed my clutch and I cant keep A frame joints up to it.

the donks fine... nothing else in the vehicle is keeping pace tho.

officially I class my chip as somewhere between "you're insane" and "Hi Steve" but not quite as far up the scale as "You are George130 re-incarnated".

If you want the bad news on chipping George130 has had about the worst run with a td5 that I'm aware of so far as chip related damage but his is an ex bruce davis plaything and is (or was) chipped so as to make big red look like a series.

I would suggest that you talk to Redback I believe they have a chipset that should be about exactly what you need (but it may need a "tweak" to suit your exact setup.

Hendrik, I can't add much more except to say that the way you would treat the vehicle sounds like it'll be fine at 260k, also choose a fuel map to suit your intended use, a Tombie flashable stage 1/2 would be fine. a Pyrometer is a must too.

I have a customer that has a 1999 Defender that was chipped at 10,000km old and used as a John Davis development platform and got the prototype intercooler and ECU etc etc and has now done 240+k without a hiccup, except for a blown head gasket due to overheat and dowel failure and since has been fine. Only 1 warped manifold occurence and no drivetrain or any other issue. Conservatively 150Killer Wasps and 470Nm....

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
