This is an interesting thread. My V8 has started to ping a lot more and is lacking power off the mark (it has snuck up on me over time and is now very obvious to me)....I have recently done coil packs, leads and plugs - all stock.
So its new MAF time again (the currrent one is about 3 years old and I have tried MAF cleaner several times). I will post back, but its my bet that it will be the culprit.
BTW if the fuel is distilled at "the same place" why in Qld does BP have its own refinery at Bulwer Island and Caltex have their own at Lytton and Shell have their own down south and in WA....thats where oil is made into petrol and other products, so it IS different.

Thanks Grumpybastard for that informative post. Will definately raise the questions with the mechanic hopefully in the next week or two when he back from holidays.
Took it for a run on the weekend up the Sunshine coast fully loaded with camping gear. Had a full tank of BP 98 and the pinking was louder than the previous tank of Vortex. As I noted earlier the MAF was replaced a year ago, so I would be rather annoyed if this is needed to be replaced again.
