Have you checked that the pulley and harmonic balancer are still tight?
Hi i recently busted a serpentine belt on my disco 2 (seized pulley).I made a make shift belt up for fan from the crank t and drove into next town at low speed 30 klms/hr for about 8 klms (isolated town marble bar w.a).That eventualy came off and I needed to be towed 80 klms through dust etc.I am waiting for a replacement belt and tensioner to be posted up (nullagine w.a).I have started the vehicle up and can hear a rattle coming from crankshaft (sounds like marbles)...any ideas??and can vehicle be driven when i replace the belt and pulley..as i wish to drive it back to perth at christmas for major service..thanks Rob

G'day Rob,
3 bolts hold the pully to the damper (59 lbf.ft)
1 bolt holds it to the crank (336 lbf.ft)
PICT1239.jpg Front
PICT1240.jpg Back
PICT1241.jpg The rubber where mine "let go"
You can get it of with out spliting it.
Hope this helps, cheers.
Thanks alien..I havent taken the bottom pulley off yet as i am still waiting for the parts to be brought up (post is only twice a week however there appears to be a small amount of play (few mills on the crank pulley)...what actually creates the rattle noise?
Thanks
Rob
When mine went it tore the rubber from the outer housing.
I could move the damper a good 30mm..
In the bottom pic. i've pointed with a spoon to the rubber, this allowed the centre to "rattle" either way.(deep metalic rattle).
A few mils sounds like it's ok to me, just flex in damper.
It took a bit of cleaning with a wire brush to clean up the outher pulleys too.
Double check your idler pulley as well Rob, If the tensioner went it might be worth doing too.
Cheers Kyle.

Thanks Kyle...the 30 mill..is that left to right (clockwise and anti clockwise).theres a lot of play there...when i moved it before it was just back and forth..(just a few mill).
Obviously the rubber prevents the metal contact.
Will I need to take radiator out to do this job...I have the rave cd....however there isnt much on it (just pictorial diagram) and not a step by step instruction.
Thanks for your help so far Kyle......when youre out in the sticks...this forum is a life line.
What would happen if i simply put the belt on and changed the part that seized up?would vehicle be driveable?
The 30mm(1 inch) was clockwise/anticlockwise ie. belt direction., the metal was contacting.
I did mine with out removing the radiatior.
Unscew the fan to make room(asume yours is off by now).
I put cardboard agaist the radiator to protect the fins as a precation.
Socket and bar on the main bolt and rotate clockwise untill it touches the L/H chassis rail.
Double check things and then breifly hit the starter,(Or bridge in realy if you know how.)
Unscrew bolt and remove.
Slide out pully from crank.(heavy)
NB> there is no keyway to worry about.
I didn't change my seal as was to hard to get at.
when refitting you may have to make the tool (as sugested on rave? I'll check that it's on there. trebor110 len't me his)
I've just made one from 30mm angle iron, drilled 2holes to suit and ground out to fit socket.(yet to use, next weekend if parts from
England land)
Putting the belt on and holding the cooling fan shaft with an allen key does work but it needed 3 goes for me.
I didn't drive mine while "rattling" as concerned for power steering pump and alt/vac pump.
What goes around comes around Rob. Outhers are helping me else where
Cheers Kyle.
Hi Kyle
My 2!!! fan belts arrived yesterday together with the tightner pulley....however I ordered the wrong part ..I should have ordered the idler pulley (No ACE)..that was completely seized!!!so ive ordered another..it will probably pay to change the idler pulley as well.
However I put the belt on to stretch it..so that when the idler pulley arrives should be easier to put on.
I tried to crank motor over with the belt on....however wouldnt crank over...probably because of the seized idler....no probs turning over without the belt...so things should be ok with the new idler. To change thetightner pulley fan will need to come off..can I do that with a large spanner???however how do i hold it in place to allow me to untighten.(untighten should be anticlockwise...normal thread??)Whilst i am waiting for the new part to arrive may as well change the tightner???can you please tell me how you took the viscous fan off.
I contacted mey dealer in Perth re the crankshaft pulley..and he quoted me $800 for the complete pulley..and theres a 1 month wait from England...is there another option for me to try and order direct from elsewhere? cost etc?I like the idea re tool made out of angle iron.
Regards
Rob
Hi Rob,
I take it your damper let go too
To get my fan off I use a EFS(12" shifter spanner) on the nut.
Normal r/h thread.
I remove 1 bolt that holds the pully on and use that gap for the shifter.
I then use a large flat blade screwdriver and wedge it agaist the remaining 2 bolts.(square shaft works better)
Hope this makes sence, don't forget to protect the radiator fins with something. Old mud flap/cardboard/masonite/you'l find something
.
When you put the adjuster on make shore the dowel pin lines up(I've got one on order too)
I picked up a 2nd hand damper ordered from a Landy shop in Melb.,It came ex Perth. Around $500 I think.
Try a serch for Landy wreckers in Perth?
Or maybe a post in Markets (parts wanted).
After your done grab the idler pully and pull the pully off the mount and have a look at how little locates it.
Cheers Kyle.
Hi alien
Viscous fan came off ok..slow process with a wrench...inch by incc..however its off now...
About to put thenew belt tensioner on...what holds the tensioner on to the motor..I cant quite see if its a bolt ..and if so what size
The dowell that you spoke about(the one that needs to be lined up) wheres that?
Many thanks
Rob
