    Temp Guage

I have a good mate who has a 2001-TD5 D2, with 270K's on the clock. There is a weird intermittent overheating issue.

The temp gauge will rocket into the red, then come back down just as quick. I was with him yesterday in the car when it did it, we pulled over and took a look. There was no bubbling in the overflow, nor did the water seem overly hot at all. He has just replaced the temp gauge sender unit, had a cooling system pressure test over night and all was fine. The car is using more water than it should but no visible signs of where it is going. The overflow container will be empty on cold and full at temp, how does water expand that much???

Has anyone got any ideas as to WTF this may be?

first the obvious...is it full??? undo the bleed screw on the T piece when you fill it and this will (should) allow air to escape the system and allow it to be filled completely. air in the system can give a false sense of fullness which may explain the cold/hot expansion tank issue.

you may also want to consider having the radiator taken apart and cleaned given the age and mileage (kilometreage ??).

do a search on the site for similar threads (your situation is not novel).

    good luck

If there's no air and the system is full then it could be a sticky thermostat.

The radiator is not the type that can be disassembled.
