Almost certainly these symptoms are down to a poor battery. The Td5 will still crankover but not start under certain conditions, IE low voltages available for engine management etc.
The clue was 'seldom used.' these vehicles need a good strong battery, as the glow circuit can draw 70amps before you factor in the fuel pump and engine cranking loads it is a lot of current req. Also, don't skimp on batteries, LR fit a 900CCA battery to these for a reason. I have had a few with all sorts of issues including the MS lamps flashing etc after starting all of which disappeared after fitting the correct battery...
Its also a good way to ruin a starter motor, cranking it over and over with reduced voltages.
Try either an all night charge up or run a jumper cable from another vehicle, running for 30 minutes, then try it again with a good surface charge.
