    Spotties without a bar

I have seen on a number of occasions spot lights on a Disco 2a (face lifted model) that bolt straight on to the standard bar (I do not want to get an after market bar). Does anyone know the brand and model of these lights?

    Cheers

You could mount any light to the bar really, find something that fits well, drill out the mounting holes and use some small gauge plate to on the back of the bar to brace it so they dont rip out the bar - if the d2a bar is as weak as the d2 bar then i wouldnt do it without a plate behind.

Ahh OK. I would have thought the lights would need to be shallow and not deep like the ones you mount on the roof for example...

Hella makes a pretty shallow light that would probably do the job - think it's called either the 140 or 160 or 170 (if I throw in enough guesses, I'll get it right eventually). They're probably as good as any you'll get as far as quality goes. I think I've also seen Narva in a similar size / profile. Haven't tried Narva myself, but am told that they also make a good quality light.

Problem is that shallow profile lights really cannot perform anywhere near as well as the deeper dish lights, especially if you're looking for a bit of "long range" illumination. They just don't have the depth in the reflector to focus the light beam forward as well. I haven't driven a D2a at night, but have been told that the lights are quite good (definitely better than the earlier D2's). Maybe consider upgrading the high beam to HID. I'm not sure what's involved with the D2a as I don't know what globes etc they are running, but imagine that it is possible. I've upgraded the lights on my earlier D2 to HID, and even though they're a pretty ordinary light to start with, the improvement is massive, to the point that I now have very good light even without turning on the spots that I also have on the bar.
    Cheers .........

There will be a few problems if you want to install this type of bar.

You will have to cut the ends back about 25mm each side so that it will fit the gap nicely.

Also, there needs to be an insert platform for the lights to mount to as the original sits too low.

    Have a look here.....

I also did not need a bar and have found this solution to be more than enough.

Until you slam into that big red...

Any auto parts store. I got mine from Bursons here in Penrith.

I didn't need the platform mentioned above to fit my Hella lights.

They are on special at Supercheap this week (until 18/9/10) reduced from $30 to $20. Possibly not Aunger brand.
