Unleaded Fuel mixed with Diesel whats the Outcome?

    Hi,
Picked up our 2001 TD5 Disco the other day and like usual the seller didnt put any fuel in it. ( What is it with vehicle sellers always selling them empty)

Anyways, found a servo down the road puled up next to the diesel pump only to pick up the UNLEADED pump instead of the Diesel

Ended up putting in 14 litres of Unleaded. And the rest diesel.

So I am wondering if it wil do any harm?

I am figuring 14ltrs mixed with 80litres shouldnt be too bad( hoping anyway)

    What do you think.

Dont think I had enough sleep the night before, thats my excuse anyway.

Also what is the procedure to change the Gaiters on the handbrake and small gear lever. Saw some leather ones on feebay that look a bit better than the ones that are on it at the moment.

    cheers
    Craig

I think you will get away with that proportion of unleaded without damage.

It'll knock like buggery and since its second hand and you have no idea of how its really been looked after or treated I strongly suggest that you dump the contaminated fuel and refill.

worst case scenario is you wind up with an inside outy piston, stuffed fuel pump, leaking seals and siezed injectors.

    best case is nothing happens.

    14/80 = 17.5%

I'd be draining and refilling. At least you'll have a good amount of shandy mix if you want to have a bonfire or something

    I'd also drain it.

The TD5 is designed to run on the world crappiest fuels such as Kero etc, but I'm not sure that compressing petrol to 20,000psi in an injector will be good for it as it breaks down the lube ina high pressure part and probably injects while combusting.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the replies.
After doing a bit more research it seems that as it has already been driven about 60kms ince fill up any damage has probably already been done if any.

So I was thinking about leaving the fuel in it and possibly adding some diesel oil to the tank.

Would this be of any value and if so what sort of quantity would I add?

I will then keep topping he tank up.

    cheers

I'd drain it and fill with nice clean new diesel. As Dave says the unit injectors are a precision bit of kit and are at last count $900 a piece. It'll cost a lot less to drop the fuel and change the filter/ flush system in the long term.
...of course, this is entirely your choice

And just to help him on his way to making his mind up, can someone please post up the procedure for draining the fuel?

I have no idea, but it would be handy to know "Just in case"...

Personally I'd drain the tank an refill it with fresh Diesel .
    It's a lot cheaper than re-building a Td5 engine
