    TD5 seems asthmatic

After a great trip up the Oodnadatta and Merenie Loop we are on the way home.

We are towing 1.6 tonne of camper trailer and struggling to maintain 100kmh on the highway.

The TD 5 seems a bit asthmatic or marginally short on power in a head wind and uphills.

I have just changed the air filter which was a little dirty.

I will see how it runs tomorrow.

If it's still a problem could it be that the Mass Air Flow Sensor needs a clean up or blow off of dust.

Pardon my ignorance but where is it and what does it look like

We arrive in Mildura tomorrow and I'm happy to remove and clean it if it might help.

Also check the fuses. The MAF one is under the bonnet.

If all else fails..... try Ventolin.
    Cheers

Does the vehicle lack enthusiasm with the camper removed? I'd be checking the camper bearings and brakes as well.

The MAF is in the inlet hose close to the air filter box,you cant miss it.
You need to get a can of CRC CO Contact cleaner or similar and give it a good clean.
As others have said check them intercooler hoses,if they are really soft and jelly like look at replacing them with silicone ones.

It also wouldn't hurt to check the MAP sensor in the inlet manifold; particularly if you haven't done the EGR bypass as it will most likely be covered in oil and soot....did mine last night it was very oily! I think it has given me crisper performance....
    Cheers Chris.

As you have noticed the aircleaner gets a lot of dusty air to deal with as the D2 air intake is under the mudguard. My mechanic kept on about it so I got a snorkle even though the car sees little off road work. The MAF was always cleaned when vehicle got serviced for the same reason, air intake from a very dusty location.

Agree with the diagnostic checks for trailer drag (bearings/brakes) and the turbo/intercooler hoses. Hope all turns out well.

What do you clean the MAP with if you don't have CRC contact cleaner?

Also check the lock nut on the waste gate activating rod. If its loose than maybe the waste gate is opening too early and needs re-adjusting.
