    Thinking of getting a Disco

    Hi All

Have owned a few 4WD over the past few years including a Pathfinder, Pajero and most recently a Jeep Cherokee.

Am interested in getting a 2001 LAND ROVER, DISCOVERY, Td5 (4x4), 4WD, 4D WAGON, 2495cc, 101kW, DIESEL, 4 SP AUTOMATIC 4x4, 188102kms. Will be towing a small trailer for camping and using the thing mostly at weekends not as a daily runner.

Don't know too much about Disco's but wondered if there is anything I should look for, wacth out for and potential worries in the future.

    Cheers

    Will

    Search is your friend grasshopper.

    1. Must have a good service history. Must.
    2. Have a LR specialist look at it.

    Things to look for.
    - Oil in ECU wiring harness - easily fixed and the upgrade is better that the original.
    - Check for shuttle valve errors in the ABS modulator. This means the ABS modulator might be on the way out. - not a cheap fix (around $1k)

    hope this helps.

    And welcome!

    W

    Thanks for the reply Waz

Have had a little look around and to be honest it sounds like they have lots of potential issues but then so do Jeeps but I never had an issue with mine, could i be so lucky second time around......

Would a 2001 TD5 have the CDL or not?

    Cheers

Depends what month it was built to whether it will have the CDL in the transfer case or not. If its early 01 it should have it, i think they removed it in late 01 and no 02 models had it. Another thing worth looking at are just common leaks, like the fuel pressure regulator can leak diesel and the front of the fuel cooler can leak coolant as one of the o-rings ages. Another thing is a noisy fuel pump, as in the tone of the pump changes when the key is turned to position II, this could mean that it is on its way out and will need replacing.

    Gday and Welcome,
Try and find out if it has had the oil pump bolt checked/ replaced, its not a big job but is a priority. there are plenty of threads about it on here.
Would also recommend fitting a coolant level alarm, same deal, not a big job but well worth the $$$
    Cheers Ean

Yeah, mine is a good one. I haven't had any problems except for the basic ones. One of my big gripes is the departure angle. I hope to improve this with a lift, some bigger tyres and a steel rear bar.

    WRT CDLs:

There is a good thread in The Good Oil section.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/39956-cdl-d2s.html

The Vin number is the only way to get model changes correct.

(eg) for CDL in or not.

If you have the diff lock stud on your unit you will only require the linkage parts, to determine this you will need to find the transfer case serial number and check it starts with either 41D or 42D.

If it starts with 61D, 62D, 69D or 70D then you will need the diff lock parts to go in the transfer case.

This is strange i know, but it's the way it is here, my D2 has a build date of august 2000, but was released as a 2001 model buy LR.

The model change is mid year, june/july/august approx
Thanks to Pedro the Swift for this info.

The factory CDL came out with the Disco 2.0a from about 2003 I think. My bro has a 2001 TD5 and it doesn't have CDL, I have a 2003 which does. You can get CDL put on though.

I'd recommend you look at a later model D2 (2003-04).

    Cheers,
    Randy

I've just decided to sell my disco if you're interested. Have a defender as well and one has to go. Off around oz in a coupla months. Its a 99 model, 170k, CDL kit, new tyres, auto, tranny cooler, ACE, Davis Landy's ECU upgrade, black widow drawer system and cargo barrier, new fuel pump. Chasing around 16g grand. PM me if you are interested.

Have to agree with the other guys in that a service record's a must. Also if you go for one with ACE make sure the compressor etc has been serviced as it should.

Sorry to appear like Im trying to flog something on a thread. Im not an indian telemarkerter.....
