    Wheel arch flares perishing

The rubber wheel arch flares on my D2a have lost much of their coating and are looking a horrible grey colour rather than the shiny black.

They really spoil the look of the car. Iv'e considered just using armourall on them but does anyone have other ideas.

    Hi there,

I had exactly the same problem except my flares had also turned very rough to touch - similar to rough sandpaper, armourall had no effect.

I sanded my flares back to a smooth finish with varying grades of wet and dry sand paper (being careful not to sand the surrounding panels) then applied a permanent bumper and trim recolour treatment; there are probably many around but the one I found from the local 'cheap' shop was 'forever black'.

3 months on and the flares look as good the day I recoloured them.

    hope this helps.

Had all mine replaced by Land Rover Australia at the running out of warranty check back in March 2008 .
I didn't even ask them to do it they just thought they looked a bit faded so they replaced them

    Thanks Anthony,

Is the recolour treatment applied by brushing or spraying? My problem sounds identical to yours. They have gone very rough like sandpaper.

    Cheers

    me too
gunna sand em and them probly coat them with stone chip textured paint like they use on the lower half of a lot of cars. comes in a 1 litre spray on pack and is paintable over but is a nice matt black textured finish that can be left uncoated. or white if you want.

p.s. if your flares arent suffering from this, as a preventative, use some silicon based tyre shine spray every few months. it will stop the plastic from drying out and going that powdery finish. we used to use that on bumber bars on fiats back in the 80's when i worked at the dealership. worked a treat in keeping them looking good.

    Hi Martin,

The product I mentioned has two bottles, one is a cleaning solution you mix with water in a bucket to first wash down with, the second is the black treatment, it has a foam applicator at the top which you simply wipe over the area you want blackened; it is similar to one of those all-in one leather shoe applicators so simple.

After blackening my flares I got carried away and wiped the applicator over other faded areas including door handles, rear wiper arm, rear bumper corners, rear step, that black plastic trim along the roof gutter, etc etc etc; about three coats each, I am really happy with the results.

It also states on the box that it contains no silicon... I don't know if this is a good thing or not but the results so far are good.

    regards,
    anthony.

I use black boot / shoe plish on mine, I mask of the body panels when applying it, but it looks good as you can shine it if you wish and it lasts 10 times as long as all the trim sprays etc that you can buy.

Ditto with this problem - front flares only though. Will sand with wet and dry and spray matte black I think rather than the shiny look...
