    Oh......

I have been using Gulf Western (think thats the right name - the aussie oil) for the last year since I brought a TD5
Its rated same as the book says to use,

I agree oils aint oils but the ratings should be consistant

I try to change the oil about every 5000-6000km and the mail fitler as well

might do some research on this now.....

I am not an oil expert (what was the fancy name for that again?) but I think the justification is that diesel oils are very high in detergents, and Castrol are saying that magnatec has enough of it?

There is a diesel specific Magnatec, I use it my self, change every 10K with a filter.
Have ran Maganatec in the Falcon for the last 80K, changed every 10K without drama, runs sweet.
On gas it comes out the same colour it goes in.

    LAND ROVERDefender/ Td5 Series, 2.5 Litre 5-Cyl. Turbo Diesel, Man, 4x4 (1999-2007)CrankcaseCASTROL MAGNATEC
Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 provides up to 5 times* better protection than other leading engine oils. Up to 75% of engine wear occurs in the first 15 minutes. Castrol Magnatec combines synthetic technology with intelligent melecules that cling like a magnet to critical engine parts, to create an additional layer of protection. When you turn off your engine, ordinary engine oils drain to the bottom of the engine, leaving the engine exposed to the heavy metal-on-metal wear that occurs from start-up. Castrol Magnatec molecules cling to the engine, to create a thin film of protection, dramatically reducing engine wear during the critical start-up/warm up period to ensure your engine is protected from the moment you turn the key. Meets and exceeds API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B3 requirements. *Tested against part-synthetic engine oils using the severe Sequence IVA wear test.CASTROL EDGE SPORT 5W-30

The information on the link says that the Magnatec Diesel is not suitable for diesel vehicles with particulate filters. Is the centrifugal filter on the TD5 one of those?

No, the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is in the exhaust system. Catches the small particulate matter in the exhaust gases ... the centrifugal filter is for filtering the fine matter in the engine oil.

    Kev..
