    A Couple of Q's

I have a 2000 TD5 Auto and have recently had a couple of small issues.

The Three Amigo's came up on Sunday while out driving in the bush (very very dusty too) and have stayed on ever since. Big problem?

Also, within the last 5 weeks there has been two morning's that the auto gearbox wouldn't change out of 3rd even at 110kph for a while but eventually did. Sign that the g/box needs oil & filter change?

Were the M&S lights on at the same time? If so, it's in limp mode & will be in 3rd gear from a standing start (not a real good thing).

Check the battery first, especially if it's doing it on cold starts.

One day I was driving home & the M & S lights were flashing along with the D in where the tripmeter is as well. I stopped the car, turned it off, gave it a minute & then started it up & its run fine ever since. This morning I was driving it to work & it got to 110kph on the highway & was just sitting in 3rd, no lights, nothing. It has done that once before too & both times it rectified itself & ran fine thereafter.

Also, it's got Dual batteries & I just had the secondary battery replaced end of last week as it was cactus, so I don't see that being the issue.

Hmm, I've got dual batts too and when my secondary was on the way out it didn't make any difference - but when the primary was sick...yes it did.

Is your main batt ok? You may not know right away if you have a collapsed cell.

Then there's all the other things that can upset the auto as well...

    Cheers

Ok, so I got the batteries tested & they're both fine. I do know the tranny is due for a filter & flush but as nobody had the filter i've had to wait for it to get here. It's going into a mate's workshop for that early next week.

Could the trans fluid & filter cause this sort of issue. In the morning it seems to change fine upto 3rd or somedays 4th and stay there but after around 5km's it drops into overdrive. If I get in the car & go somewhere during my lunch break (noonish) it works absolutely fine. Could the problem be that the fluid is real think & dirty & therefore doesn't flow properly when cold but once it warms up a little it's at the right viscosity?

The D2 Auto is intelligent (of sorts) and uses adaptive shift patterns ... as in, it won't go from 4th to tc lockup until the transmission temp / fluid temp reaches a certain point ... so, first thing in the morning when it's all cold, it won't lockup ... mine's a 2004 model, and does the same. Electronic control ... not hydraulic like in a D1 or older style auto transmissions.

That said, fresh fluid & filter can only benefit your auto!

    auto box

I agree with "Fluids" the auto won`t go into lockup untill it`s warmed up.
I find that when the coolant gauge comes up to normal...ie half way then it will do it.Normally around 3-5Ks or so, so I guess this pretty well coincides with the auto warming up.
Any lights like M&S coming on may suggest poor voltage due to battery /alternator or bad earth connection somewhere.D2`s hate high resistances and bad connections.
