Hey guys,
can anyone tell me how the rear wheel carrier is fixed to the back door. There are x 6 bolts that go into the back door, do they just screw straight in? or do you need to rip off the door lining on the inside of the back door to get to a bolt plate they are afixed to.
Just want to see what info I can get before taking it off for modification.

Are you serious?????????? You need to pull that whole trim off each time you want to undo the back carrier???? That's nuts! Surely you would snap some if not all of the clips for the trim if you tried to do that.

Its worse; you have to mangle the plastic liner as, in my case at least, I couldn't get it off the perimeter without damaging the plastic. Instead, I now use a sharp knife to cut the liner and then use duct tape to reseal it, leaving the perimeter untouched. I also have 3 of the clips broken having had to remove the trim several times.

Yep all of the above, and be carefull not to stuff the holes in the trim that the clips locate in. Its like glorified cardboard and once it is torn or damaged the clip will not sit in it pproperly and your trim will not be a snug fit.
I take it you are modding to fit bigger tyres? I have successfully done this by drilling new holes in the carrier. If you invert the spacer bar it works as a template. By drilling new holes you lift the carrier 20mm wthout having to do another mod for the wiper. The wheel also stays closer to the hinges. You will need to flatten about 10mm of the lip of the carrier to accommodate the bolt.
Seriously easy job to do I know cos I was able to do it.

I must have the only D2 (01 model), that has the fixed nuts in place for the wheel carrier.
When I flipped mine over after the bigger tyres went on, I pulled off the door trim, stuffed one plastic clip, cut the plastic where I needed to only to find the nuts were all solid mounted to the door....
But even so, It was real easy, some hundred mph tape back on the plastic to re seal it and alls good.
And as mentioned mate, use the spacer as a template to drill your two new holes, from memory there was markings showing where the new holes would go anyway on the actual carrier and just move the rear wiper a couple of teeth around on the shaft to allow for the different angle of the carrier..

Once you have pulled of the trim the first time, silicone the nuts into place and if you want to remove the carrier bolts again, you can avoid removing the raer trim if you remove the bolts carefully.
Or you can buy a bracket that bolts onto the existing carrier and that negates removal of the carrier and trim.

When you remove the rear trim, slip a pair of rulers down each side of each clip and lift the trim to release the clip. Also, do it on a warm day when the clips are not as brittle.
