I think A/T's will be your best bet if you are doing a heap of gravel and bitumen driving . if you went muddies they would wear out a lot quicker and make more noise on the road which could get on your nerves if you are traveling for big amounts of time ..... just my 2 cents .

Check out the Goodyear MTR also.

I'll second Fusion and say that I reckon full muddies would do your head in all the way round Oz on the kinds of roads you're talking about.

I know opinions are "divided" on Cooper tyres here, but some people (me included, although I don't have them currently) swear by them. And they do a specific ST-C all-terrain that's well suited for unsealed highways and rocky tracks.

For your intended use I would recommend an ATR type tyre, rather than a mud tyre.

Get a set of four at the same time if possible.

I am having a great run out of some Pirelli Scorpion ATRs in 245/70 16 size (LT construction) at the moment. They are fitted to a RRC that is doing about 1000km of highway driving per month. They are 11 months old and show no apreciable wear. They also do some dirt road, rocky track and beach work.

I would also recommend BFG All Terrains, I have had a good run out of them in the past. In fact they are what I was going to buy when I got the Pirellis, but I couldn't source any at the time.

What a question, and everyone will have an opinion or two. From my own experience, it is easy to get carried away with the intended use, as being more rugged that it ever will be.
I run Goodrich AT's, and if I am being honest for the use I put them through, I should have highway terrains. The Goodrich At's are however easy to live with, and even when partly worn, are relatively quiet. My experience with muddies is limited, but without fail, all types used with the chunkier tread blocks were more noisy, particularly so when partially worn.
Personally I wouldn't go near any of the minor brands like Mickey Thompsons or even Coopers. ( yes they are a minor brand back in the States ) So standby for the flood of opinion, as everyone will have one.

Heaps of info there to get an opinion of what could work best for you. Judging from the review the Pirelli's get the best rating ... and seem to be good value as well. Good luck.
