    TD5 centrifugal oil filter

I was reading about the td5 engine and it states that there is a cetrifugal oil filter which needs to be replaced every 57,000km. can anyone tell me how to identify this item? is it inside the engine covers? is it easy/cheap to replace? my service records dont indicate that this has ever been done and I have done 3 times the recommended mileage

It is simply a oil filter that spins under oil pressure. They get replaced as a standard oil filter does at the same time.
Its adjacent to the usual spin on filter inside an aluminium housing.
Look around the turbo/spin on filter.

stick your head under the bonnet and get someone to turn the engine off, if you can't see it you will probably hear it spinning down after the engine has turned off.

Its under the alloy dome housing that is held in place by 2 bolts, you need to undo the 2 bolts and lift that dome off to get to the filter.

Go to www.discovery2.co.uk and look at the oil change section, it will give you a step by step with pics..

remove the acoustic cover (you can still see it with it in place but its easier without it.)

mounted to the engine to the front of the turbo charger you will see a round domed cover about the same diameter as a large can of baked beans it has the word LEVER cast into it with an arrow pointing to somewhere behind the left hand front wheel as you look at it from the top.

That cover is the cover for the centrifuge oil filter its held in by 2 m8x1.25 (from memory) shanked bolts in about the 12-1 and 5-6 position as you look at it from the top from the left side of the vehicle.

I do my oil changes every 15K Km and change both filters, be careful of the positioning of the oring seal on the underside of the cover cap. Occasionally it will sit in the housing and be missed on a change. Additioonally before seating the new seal ensure that it has no twists in it and you have lubricated the seal and the face inside the housing itself to prevent the seal from twisting upon installation. the bolts get done up to just past hand tight (10Nm and thats it any more may strip the threads out of the housing. If this happens a field fix is a longer bolt with a pair of washers and nuts on the underside of the housing, Its doable but awkward.
