Five weeks, $4k bill, but the car is back and running like new. The mechanic even threw in the service for nothing.
I guess the *only* way you could ever pick this happening again is a weekly oil level check?

The weekly oil level check sounds like the go. Did mechanic say where diesel was leaking from?

It was an injector seal. Apparently when they go, 20,000-odd psi of pressure vents the fuel straight into the engine block.

Holy crap! It wouldn't take long to dilute the oil. Did you notice that fuel pump was working it's guts out or just that fuel gauge was dropping as fast as a V8?

So, where did the $4000 go to?
When you posted that originally I thought it must have been a new head & injectors, not just seals.

the only time 20K psi of diesel makes it out of the injector is out the nozzle or if the injectors cracked. you'd know it if you had it the thing would run like a dog and it would have cut a hole in the ally.

if the top body-head seal lets go then the diesel comes out at 80psi-ish.

if the bottom or nozzle seal lets go you initially wind up with combuastion gasses heading for the fuel tank via the return and then you wind up with a run away td5 when the seal fails enough that the lift pump can push the diesel past the injector.

Pressure-testing/overhauling the injectors, replacing the injector cams and rockers, oil, labour, car hire, beer. A fair bit had to be outsourced.

And the ****** thing has just done it again! Easter Sunday stuck by the Calder Fwy at Taradale. Started losing power uphill and then blew the wastegate open again on the first big towing trip since the top end was rebuilt.
