    under car protection

    Gday All,

Was just wondering if anyone with a front bar can tell me if they have anything fitted from under the bar to the main chassis rail that runs across under the radiator..

The car has been like it for years but the radiator does look vulnrable to something flying up into it..

Just wondering if it was an ARB standard thing or if they all are like it or if they we to lazy to fit a guard there...

    Thanks and Cheers Ean

I have a 2000 D2 Td5 and there is no protection in that area either. (I have an ARB bar fitted, not winch type)

There is a plastic scoop fitted which appears for the purpose of directing airflow up to the radiator....it would seem that it just may direct anything else like rocks etc up there too if one was caught the wrong way. Now you've alerted me to it I may do something about it.

    Cheers

    Gday Mick,

Was thinking of just getting some perspex sheet and bring a couple of 1' angle off the bolts to the bar, then it will be above the 2 slots in the bottom of the bar...Should be pretty simple to cover in...

I'm just a bit wary of restricting the airflow to the radiator to the point where it's a potential problem. Obviously the scoop was put there by LR to ensure flow and the ARB bar has holes incorporated to assist this.

I have a steering gear protection bar fitted already (err, tried and tested) and was toying with the idea of fitting a protection/bash plate (alloy?) running from the ARB bar to link up with that, but with a series of holes to allow for airflow. I notice that some plates on the market have holes in them and some don't. The size of the holes would have to be taken into consideration. Don't know if I'm over stressing the airflow issue or not, just rather be safe than sorry.

    Cheers

    Thanks Mick,
I did look at that this morning, may get some alloy and slot it, will have a think about it, but would think enough air would flow straight thru the grill..

Might have a close look at 1 without a bar, as dont think they would have a gap like that..

Will look abit clser before I do to much,,,Might evern lace some prawn net across there, get some nice thick small mesh, would stop anything big and allow air to pass thru...

My D2 has a TJM bar & the bar came with a bash plate that goes from the Bar almost to the steering damper. The bash plate is around the same width as the radiator. It screws to the bottom lip of the bar & also to the stock round protection bar in front of the steering arms.

It works well, has been hit a few times.I had it galvanised as the powder coating was coming off it.

Don't know if the bottom of the ARB bar is similar.

Due to the fact that you have not mentioned any airflow issues I assume (there's that word again) that you haven't had any problems in that area?

I'm probably over reacting to that issue then and it doesn't cause any problems. Genuine concern on my behalf folks, there's a lot more people here that know more than I do and I'm happy to listen them

    Cheers

    Bash plate

I spoke with Davis Performance in Sydney recently and they can fabricate some underbody protection. I wouldn't be so worried about the air flow but I have a scan gauge to keep a close eye on that.

I have some steel plate forming the floor of an old trailer I am considering turning into a bash plate as a project one of these days. The first radiator spearing incident should spur me onto it I imagine

    Duncan.
