hot Engine bay but how hot is hot

    I drive a 2000 model D2 TD5 auto with 153000km on the clock:

I have noticed that my engine bay from the outside gets hot to touch.

I mean the outside of the bonnet and side pannel.

The temp gauge does not move at all and is just above half way on the gauge as it has beeen scince I bought a month or so ago.

It is not enough to burn but it is enough that your hand will not stay their too long.

The electric fan ('thermo fan) does not cut out when letting engine cool down.

Is this normal or do I need to start looking. The radiator expansion chamber is full to the right level.

When I bought it I was told that it has had a full service but I have my doubts due to the fact that the air filter is dirty and is not new in my opinion. I have not driven over that much dirt.

I have washed the outside of the radiator to see if that was blocked and it was a little but not that much.

It has normal power and everything, it is just hot.

Is this normal or were should I start looking.

    Thanks, Jeremy

Hi If your at all worried get it checked out ASAP. I believe the temp gauge is controlled by the computer and only gives an average temp reading.

My temp gauge never moves but the alarm on the engine saver I fitted will often sound whenever I hit long steep hills or towing our van. I have to turn the sensitivity up a bit to cancell the alarm as there has been an obvious increase in the temp.

Not sure about the thermo fan? From what I have found out so far (RAVE CD) it only comes on with the air con? I was going to ask about this on the forum?? Any one have an answer?

Not sure about the TD5, but my V8 sits at about 81/82 degs generally.
The other day, on a hot one, out on some rocky tracks with the WA-AULROians I was reading a max peak of 91 degs all day.
(live readings taken from bluetooth OBD-II reader)

When you stand next to my bonnet/wings (especially near the wheels) when the engine is nicely "warmed", the heat from it does feel dangerously hot, but my readings are generally in the low 80's.

Not sure how much this helps....!!

    Cheers,

    Out af left field here,
I have wondered about the heat felt on the external guards myself (v8), asked Ricks 4wd (landy mechanics), and the answer was yep, the body work holds the heat in. Alloy transfers heat so quickly, would this also assist in the panels feeling hot.Diesel maybe its just the panel design not alowing heat to escape. I did hear it was helpful in water crossings maybe , hot air cannot escape keeping water level down like I said , left field.

i had worries that my temp gauge wasn't working so I bought a $20 cooking temp probe from ebay.
I put it in the radiator top bleed nut hole and started the engine and ran it at hight revs till it warmed up a little then checked the probe temp against the temp gauge reading. It was near enough.

As long as your gauge actually moves from cold to about halfway and stays there sounds like you fans are doing the job correctly. If you do want to double check though try the temp probe thing.

Thats how it is for mine, A/C on, electric fan on, A/C off electric fan off.
Put the Nanocom on instrument mode the other day and drove to work.
Temp sat around 87-89 the whole trip (1ookph) on a 33 degree day, I then put it on another Disco and it ran at 90-92 on a 35 degree day.
I think on the rave cd it say says the thermostate fully opens at 92.

    Thank you all.

The gauge does move correctly so it seems to be working correctly.

This makes a lot of sense.

I took her for her first long trip which gets you thinking.

I remember from my last D2 some years ago that I noticed the heat coming from under the car when I get out.

I always have had the AC on so this would make sense.

    Thanks all for your help.

    Hay Hangover,

I don't now where you usually hang but looking at your avatar you are associated with RRC, this will be my first real project so I may need for of your advice in very near future.

    Thanks once again all,

I nearly forgot, I will look into trying the temp gauge control, (I need to learn how to multi quote)
