    Hi
Sounds like you done some research already.
That should get u a good one with some $$ for acc.
Service history is a absolute must, get it checked and do a major service and hoses etc once you have it.

Get a low km model as you can afford and make sure it has a CDL(centre diff lock).
Once chipped by some gurus on here they go very well.

i have heard bad stories about the electrics but i know some cars are lemons?? ddo they have a lsd and if so how good are they. How does the TD5 go against other TD such as a gu TD or 80series TD, How do they go for servicing costs. i guess i really need to know if there is a better model that i can get for my money or not?? any help and info is really much appreciated. Thanks

    Hi DASH

Why don't you spend a bit of time down at the car sales yard and take a few for a spin around the block .... Each one will drive different .... After you have test driven a few, then maybe this may answer the Q's on what has more power & how does it compare .... after that, then ask a few Q's about which ride "turned you on" ....

Disco's don't have LSD .... but rather, Open centers .... if you want extreme diffs ... then you are gonna have to upgrade to lockers & tough axles ... unless they are already fitted

Discos have enough balls & flex, to get you through most things ..... and will put other brands to shame with the right combo setup + driver skills .... But most importantly, you need the passion to own a LR.... so need to compare to others

The Td5 is a much smaller engine than the Nissan and Tojo engines. But it is still a very good performer and when chipped can match their performance. In terms of parts and servicability you'd find that the parts are roughly the same. I do all my servicing and work on my car myself, and use mostly genuine parts where I can. You can also use aftermarket parts, bought directly from the UK from places like Paddocks, LR series etc. Most UK suppliers also carry genuine parts.

D2's don't have an LSD, instread they have traction control which in my opinion is much more effective than an LSD. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you master it you will put other patrol and cruiser drivers to shame...even with stock suspension.

Regarding the electrics, the D2 has lots of them but you can buy a diagnostic for the td5 called the nanocom which allows you to instantly clear faults and also find them. Have a look at some threads here on the common yet easily fixable faults with the td5, plenty of info on here ie The Good Oil.

A D2 with a 2in lift can easily fit 33in muddies without cutting the guards. Its a comfortable car with great all round visibility, plenty of room in the back and plenty of accesories available for them if you know where to look. Land Rovers are great, don't listen to people who has never owned one because they don't know ****...we hope to welcome you to the D2 clan soon

    Mine has served me well
    99 TD5 Man with ACE.
    Owened it for 5 years,paid $15000,had 198000k when I bought it.
    Now 245000k.
Done the head gasket, and a few other NORMAL D2 issues.
Due for a new clutch and radiator.
A lot of vehicle for $15000!!!!
Nice to drive, nice to punish, nice to own!!!
Look into CDL models if you intend doing decent 4x4.
No factory lockable CDL till the "D3" style headlights.
Early D2s like mine have the CDL that you can make a DIY CDL,there was a gap where no CDL internals wer fitted.
DEFFINATELY chase an ACE equiped D2.
    ENJOY

    Dash.
Do a search on all the above questions in the search area.
They will go into much detail there.

Ace is active cornering enhancement and works a treat, it will corner very flat whilst still very compliant in suspension department.

Manual or auto is personnal choice.
Auto good for sand driving and towing, but so is manual really.
Its personnal choice at the end of the day.

Have a look in the market section on here, I bought 2 of my cars through here and both are great.

Some are over $1k others less how much less depends on if Tomie (subscriber on here) is doing a special.what year/month models have CDL fitted from factory ad will it need to be a sereis 3 to have one form factory? No series 3 is a totally different model, I think what was meant by series 3 lights might be the pocket lights that came with the D2 upgrade or D2a as sometimes referred to. The CdiffLock is fully operational in the D2a (2003ish) the early D2 1999 and 2000 had the internals but no lever to access it, after market options are available as well as DIY solutions ranging from getting underneath the vehicle with a spanner and activating the CDL or other bits of metal to connect the earlier D1 levers. in between those two time periods there were no CDL internal to the transfer case (TC) and the only option if you wanted it was to replace the TC.
what the hell is ACE(is it like sway bars??) ACE is active Cornering Enhancement, a hydraulicly activated ram that is in effect an active sway bar that keeps the car flat while cornering at speed (like it is on rails, to the limits of adhesion of the tyres) while allowing flex at low speed. The people that have it and know the benefits love it the ones that don't have it usually say they would prefer to do without it (complications, cost etc all the crap that people use as an excuse when they don't want to get something)also how does the manual/auto's compare?? im open to both This one is personal choice, having originally come from a manual car and into a defender (only come in manual) I was prepared to argue that manual was king but after driving a D2a TD5 with the auto I will not go back in a hurry. Electronically controlled autos are great and the ZF is one of the best.
    thanks
The other option you have with the D2 is airbag suspension. A bit like ACE, the people that have them either love them or want to convert them to coils (they were probably anti airbags anyway). The coils are simple cheap and cheery, people fear having an airbag go in the bush or having the compressor give up on you. I like the airbags, they autolevel the vehicle so when you tow you don't have to use bars to distribute load and have the car get up off it's arse.

I use the D2a as a daily driver (DD) after having used the 300Tdi defender ad a DD for a few years it is a much better ride around town, out in the bush for longer term travel I use the defender more for the space and you can set them up by building racks/shelves drill through panels and they still look OK, plenty of room for extra fuel and water etc. I am a little less keen on drilling into the D2a plus the shorter wheel base means they pitch more on unmade roads, the defender smooths out the quick sharp chopping pitching.
