I have a question which may be relevant,
Why do diesel engines need a catalytic converter?
Surely this is an important consideration in all the above replies?

I can understand why petrol engines need one,
    Thanks

To remove nasty emissions before the exhaust hits the environment...?

Same reason, just a slightly different type of cat...

For compression-ignition (i.e., diesel) engines, the most commonly used catalytic converter is the diesel oxidation catalyst. This uses excess O2 (oxygen) in the exhaust gas stream to oxidize CO (carbon monoxide) to CO2 (carbon dioxide) and HC (hydrocarbons) to H2O (water) and CO2.

So why does my 04 D2a Td5 not have a cat ? Still got the factory exhaust and there's no evidence that it ever has a cat fitted ??

Whether your vehicle has a cat or not depends on when the emissions regs came in, and how clean the engine is.

As mentioned, commercial vehicles were different from passenger cars. Some of the EFI diesels with high pressure commonrail injection and EGR managed to get their emissions clean enough that they met EURO III standards without much aftertreatment.

The cat is the small round can in the turbo pipe just as it runs under the firewall.
If you have an MY03 onwards, they're EURO3 which are cat systems.
If it's not there, it's been removed.

    Cheers
