Problem solved. It was the PCV valve. The guts had fallen out of it.

Dave.
most falcons have a plastic PCV that explodes when you have a backfire.
the older was metal.
what you have to check was if its blown out the end this hasn't gone inside.
Back to the original question.
Hangover(Steve) bought a generic OBD2 reader for his falcoon.
Would be worth shooting him a PM to see what he can do with his.I dont thing it was expensive.

Isn't it a Ford based engine what is in the Puma? I bought a V8 XR8 Falcon and a Defender 130 brand new in 2003. Both have done around 180,000. The Falcon going strong and the Defender just had the head on the TD5 crap itself with a crack at the base of one of the injectors. Projected repair cost is around $5000. And the TD5 is supposed to be one of LR best engines. I am pretty disappointed let me tell you.
This is exactly what has happened. My son is at uni at Ballarat and he told me when he started it to come home for the weekend it backfired. He then told me it is not running right.
The rocker cover appears to have some sort of an internal housing to catch the bits. When I removed the valve the metal internal bit was sitting on a ledge and I could retrieve it with pointy pliers. The plastic around the bottom of the valve which broke is missing, but being plastic I am not to concerned.
